Robin, Promise, and Delilah remain the only redeemable things about these books. ( )

Killed me dead, just dead. Like Connor Grey, this is a series I wait for and enjoy sinking back into. Having parts of the book told from Niko's point of view added something this series needed, I think. It isn't always pleasant to be in Cal's head, nor do you get a realistic view of every character. Having Niko narrate also helps give a more realistic view of Niko himself (who Cal idolizes so sees as perfect but who, turns out, is a flawed human being just like the rest of us).

Since this book picks up right after the previous it's no surprise that Robin Goodfellow is in a bad way. He hasn't even gotten laid! But he does manage to adopt (or be adopted by) a mummified cat and finds a very surprising sexual partner so as it so often is with Pucks, all's well that ends well.

The Auphe are back and they are mad. And also apparently horny. In the previous book Cal and Niko managed to destroy most of the Auphe. Turns out they destroyed all the males, leaving Cal the only male (half)Auphe left alive. He's the foundation of their breeding plan, the poor guy. But before they take him they're going to kill everyone in his life in the most brutal way possible. There's a moment in the book where Cal realizes he could run away, die, go insane, or get back up and fight and it was at that moment when I realized how much he has grown up since the first book.

As I mentioned, I got a better view of Niko in this book and I like him more because of it. The one thing he needs, no, requires, from those in his life is honesty. He won't judge what he's told but he needs to be told. When he finds out Promise kept things from him that shakes him deeply.

The book begins and ends with the tale of Hammer, a dog that Cal and Niko lived near as children. It will shake you to your core but when you think about it you won't be surprised at all. ( )

Bodyguarding a vampire from a mysterious stalker is all in a night's work for brothers Cal and Niko Leandros. It's not even that hard. But when the vampire's your girlfriend's ex, and her daughter just turned up with a South American jungle deity on her tail, not to mention the Auphe have resurfaced with a whole new lust for Cal... that's night life in the Big Apple if you're a Leandros.

Alternating perspectives this time, so events unfold from both Niko and Ca's perspectives - the snark level seldom falls below the red line, and the action never slows down. The pages just keep right on turning, too. ( )

It will come as no surprise to anyone who's read any of my previous reviews of the Cal Leandros books that I really like this series. Deathwish was no different, in fact I would go as far as to say it was my favourite installment yet.

After the massive cliffhanger at the end of the previous novel, when the Auphe come back in force, I was dying to get my hands on this book. And it doesn't disappoint. The Auphe are one of my favourite villians, and there return can only be a good thing (unless you're a character in this novel, of course, in which case it's most definitely NOT a good thing)

In the previous book in the series we learnt all about Robin's background, as a bit of a subplot. This time around it is Promise's past that gets slowly revealed to us through several of the subplots. And speaking of subplots in this novel there is so much going on, two main plotlines with so many other minor plots going on, it was really good. Seamus, the Vigil, Oshossi, so much.

There is a bit of a change from previous books in that the narration is no longer just from Cal, but regularly switches between Cal and Niko. This was a bit distracting, and detracted a little from my overall enjoyment. Not enough to give it four stars, but nearly.

One of the great things about this series is the way the characters progress as the series goes on. Robin is still suffering from the events in the last book. Promise and Niko's relationship is examined and put to the test in this novel. Events actually have an impact on the characters in the future. It's rewarding for the reader to be able to watch the characters grow as the series goes on.

Read this series in order, you won't regret it.

P.S. A word of caution, at the end of the book there is a preview of Doubletake (Cal Leandros 7) at the end of the kindle edition (not sure about the paperback edition) which I wrongly assumed would be the next book in the series, it's not, it's the 7th book. I started reading this to get a taster of what was coming next and read a couple of spoilers. I would advise against reading this. ( )

The Auphe are back. The monstrous side of half-human Cal Leandros has returned. Before, they wanted to use Cal to destroy the world. Now they have a totally different purpose in mind. At the same time, Cal and his brother, Niko, have to make a living by pulling day jobs and taking contracts for their preternatural detective agency. A vampire named Seamus hires them to find out who is following him. The brothers are fine with that. They hang out with vampires all the time--including Niko's girlfriend, Promise. But when Promise's unexpected vampire family shows up, the issue becomes a lot more complicated.

The series continues to be strong, using the wonderfully dark and snarky voice of Cal. This book also introduced first-person chapters from the perspective of Niko, and it worked very well. Thurman does a fantastic job of keeping her heroes under constant threat of death (or worse) from many unexpected creatures. I do have to say the ending here felt kind of off for me. It had a lull where nothing happened. In most books, that would be fine. But after several hundred pages of adrenaline rush, it was quite noticeable. ( )
