A dinosaur's exuberance about moving cools considerably when he realizes how much he misses his next-door friend.

This simple story is about Mitchell a green dinosaur who is tired of his old house, old kitchen and old place. He wants to try a new life in a new place; so he decides to move away. His next-door neighbor and friend Margo does not want Mitchell to move. She tries hardily to stop him from being far away from her, but she can’t. Margo is upset when Mitchell runs away. Mitchell is very excited to be at his new house, and in a new bed, but he soon realizes it is not fun to be alone with no friend. Margo feels the same way, so she comes to visit Mitchell and they work together and build a house for Margo, so they become neighbors again. I liked the sense of humor in this story when Margo tries to prevent her best friend to stay close to her (“I will take you to the laundromat in my laundry bag, and I will wash away your idea of moving”) she also wants to cement him to his ceiling. However, I thought this book would be a good one I could read to my daughter because her best friend moved to Huston two weeks ago. I want to help her cope, but the end of the story it was not what I expected. When Mitchell is upset because he left his friend, she comes to live next to him in again in a new place. Unfortunately, this is not the truth for most children, but that does not mean I am not going to share the funny story with my students and enjoy these comical characters. ( )

“Mitchell is Moving,” follows a dinosaur named Mitchell who is tired of his house and is moving away. His next-door neighbor and friend Margo does not want Mitchell to move, and is upset when Mitchell moves away. Mitchell is very excited to be at his new house, but he soon realizes it is not as fun without a friend to share it with. Margo comes to visit Mitchell and the two of them build a house for Margo so they can be next-door neighbors again.
I thought this was a very cute book, and it discussed being lonely in a new place. However, I was hoping this would be a book I could read to students in my class who were moving away to help them cope, and I don’t think book is very good for that. Mitchell realizes he is upset that he left his friend, and then she comes to live in the new place. Unfortunately, this is not a reality for most students – they will move away and their friends will not follow. I think it is rather unrealistic of what happens in real life today, so it would not be appropriate to read to a student who is moving, in my opinion. ( )

I admire the way Sharmat created lovable and rich characters, and the rhythmic text fits both the story and the 'ready-to-read' designation, But I'm a little concerned that a child who is compelled to move away from her friends will be even more stressed by the choices made in this book, as compared by the lack of control she has against her parents'/caregivers' demands. I'll keep my eye open for other Mitchell books, though. ( )

This book talks about a dinosaur whobis tired of living at the same house. So he moves away from it and his best friend. Then he gets sad and wants his friend back. She eventually came and built a house next door. Good book for 1st grade.
