X-Force, Vol. 2: Final Chapter - Mike Allred, Peter Milligan
Too much truthfulness and bluntness can be depressing. For some reason, I was left more in awe of the first volume: maybe reading too much of this in a row means that some of the shock and novelty has worn off.
Not that this is any less brilliant. It's still staggeringly brilliant, and it still peels away any rose-tinted view of the world to leave a unvarnished look at a team that is in it for the money and fame. (And I think in today's world, it's unrealistic to think that some people with superpowers would not use their powers for fame. In fact, creating a team to monetize their powers? That seems very likely to happen to me.)
This run of the series does not flinch from harsh truths, and therein lies how powerful it is. I've said this in the review of the first volume, and it remains true, perhaps is truer, in this volume.
However, I can't move onto X-Statix right now. This last volume of this run of X-Force - and it does end to become X-Statix as the group goes through a name change, and thus the new series - has left me feeling down. I need a break before I move onto the rest, but I will move on eventually. I'm just going to read some Sub-Mariner and Doom before I do this.
As for other books - paperbacks, coloring books, Comixology books - I have not forgotten them. I'm especially keeping Check Mate in mind, but I have some time tomorrow where I'm walking and can't read on the computer. I'll continue. It just may be slower going than I expected as I'm in a pretty hardcore Marvel/MU phase right now. ( )
