Michigan Flora, now complete with this volume, is a guide to all the conifers and flowering plants of the state. The three volumes are based on the authors examination of approximately a quarter-million specimens in herbarium collections throughout the state and elsewhere. Features of this Flora are full identification keys, further observations on recognition, concise summaries of the habitat, historical notes (especially regarding weeds), and other useful information. The first volume (Gymosperms and Monocots) appeared in 1972 and was immediately honored by the Michigan Legislature in a Senate resolution extending an accolade of tribute to the institutions, organizations, and individuals responsible for this meaningful documentation of Michigan's natural heritage, a link uniting our citizens with the beauties of their state. The second volume (Dicot families, in part) was published in 1985 and received the Henry Allan Gleason Award of the New York Botanical Garden for an outstanding recent publication in the field pf plant taxonomy The present third volume covers the remaining families of Dicots, including nearly 800 species in the heath, gentian, milkweed, borage, mint, nightshade, snapdragon, bladderwort, honeysuckle, gourd, bellflower, and related families having the petals united to each other. Almost 40 percent of the species are in the great family of asters, daisies, sunflowers, and other Composites. Michigan Flora is one of the relatively few multi-volume state or regional floras that has in fact been brought to a successful conclusion. Very rare are such complete floras of any kind with full keys, distribution maps for all species, and substantial illustrations. - Dust jacket.… (mais)
