I've figured out why I can't stand the main character - she reminds me too much of Clara Oswald! Her complete lack of formal training in investigation, the way she manages to coax intimate secrets and confessions out of others, the snappy banter with attractive men, and the blundering into plans that somehow turn out to endear her to the primary characters -- it drives me batty! And yet, I'm still reading! ( )

Synopsis: Italy is a balm to Julia's spirit. However, Ly marries an Italian girl without his father's permission and that demands that they all are required to come home for Christmas. And of course, Portia and Father have stacked the list of visitors so that Brisbane is there, as well. Of course, things don't go smoothly and there is a murder. There is also a jewel thief among the guests, a mystery about where some pearls are hidden, and the usual conflict between Julia and Brisbane.
Review: There is too much will she/won't she business between Julia and Brisbane. The semi ending of the book is that the murder was most likely committed by a female serial killer. And of course, there's a set up for the next book. ( )

Returning home for Christmas after an extended Italian vacation, Lady Julia Grey expects the usual family ructions that naturally occur when her many siblings are together. What she does not expect is that Nicholas Brisbane, who kissed her and then cut off all communication for months, is already an established house guest -- along with his new fiancee. She also does not expect to find a dead body in the chapel of her family home. With the house party snowed in, can Julia and Brisbane put their differences aside in time to locate the killer before scandal besets them all?

As with the first book in the series, I enjoyed this very much. If you're a fan of light historical mystery with a touch of romance, this series might be a good fit for you. ( )

Silent in the Sanctuary
4 Stars

Returning home to Belmont Abbey, Lady Julia Grey finds her ancestral home inundated with friends and family including the one man she thought never to see again, the inscrutable Nicholas Brisbane. Amid Christmas preparations and parlor games, a killer lurks and when one of the guests is found bludgeoned in the sanctuary, Julia and Nicholas resume their unlikely partnership in order to uncover the truth before the murderer strikes again...

Raybourn’s writing style is very engaging and the details of Victorian society merge smoothly into the storyline. Nevertheless, the pacing is problematic with an excess of exposition and the actual mystery only beginning halfway through the book.

The murder plot develops slowly with several intriguing twists and turns. Unfortunately, the climax is rather tepid and the resolution somewhat unsatisfying - Emma and Lucy not only get away with their crimes but benefit from them as well.

Julia and Nicholas’s attraction continues to smolder and there are one or two passionate embraces, but once again their romance is lacking in detail. Although Nicholas and Julia are both appealing characters, his tendency toward condescension blinds him to her insights while she has a unfortunate habit of jumping to conclusions, usually the wrong ones, which inevitable leads her into trouble.

The majority of the secondary cast is comprised of Julia’s charmingly eccentric family members, loyal yet opinionated servants and a number of intriguing house-guests. Each and every character from Julia's overindulgent father, curmudgeonly aunt and appallingly dressed brother to the shy and awkward cousin, insolent maid, and less than pious country curate contributes to the warm and intimate yet also somewhat insidious atmosphere of the story.

On a final note, the change in narrators took some getting used to, especially since I’d recently listened to Jennifer Van Dyck’s narration of Richelle Mead’s Dark Swan series, which is in a completely different genre. That said, the narration is well-done overall and Van Dyck's male voices are exceptional although her female voices are too snooty for my tastes. ( )

Lady Julia Grey, fresh from Italy, joins her family at the family home for the Christmas season and has a mystery to solve. She comes with her brothers Plum and Lysander and Lysander's new Italian wife Violante. They also brought along young Count Alessandro Fornacci who has a crush on Julia.

When she arrives she finds quite a gathering. Her sister Portia is there as are poor relations Emma and Lucy Phipps along with Lucy's new fiance Sir Cedric Eastley, a self-made man, and his secretary/nephew Henry Ludlow. Also present is the man Julia has spent months trying to forget. Nicholas Brisbane is there along with his fiance Mrs. Charlotte King.

That evening at dinner, they are joined by the Vicar who is an honorary uncle and his new curate Lucian Snow who is charming and rather feckless. He immediately uses his charm to try to endear himself to the wealthy, single ladies.

This house party is filled with tension. Nicholas and Julia have unresolved issues and Snow's political views regarding gypsies immediately puts Julia's back up. There is also some secret about why Nicholas is wearing a sling. When Snow is found dead in the chapel with Lucy holding a bloody candlestick, the investigation begins. Julia's father orders Nicholas and Julia to investigate together which is not what Nicholas wants.

Add in ghostly wanderings, missing jewels, and attempted poisonings and you have a wild ride of a mystery. I love the detailed picture of life in the upper classes in England in the late 1880s. Julia's father is quite a progressive thinker for his daughters but less so for his sons. He encourages Julia to stretch herself which is something Julia wants to do since she has never felt as alive or as useful as when she was involved in her first investigation and wants the same again.

I am intrigued by Julia's relationship with Nicholas Brisbane. He is continually pushing her away and occasionally drawing her close. Julia is fascinated by the mystery of him. ( )
