I liked the book, overall. It was a page turner, and I loved the world Ms Collins created. The characters were believable as was the plot. The gruesomeness was handled in a sensitive way, all in all, but I was disappointed in the ending. The book moved from a gripping dystopian sci-fi to a love story. In fact I admit that I didn't really want to read any of the other books. It had great potential but I ultimately felt let down by the conclusion. Not at all what I was expecting. Suzanne Collins is an excellent writer who develops wonderful characters who come alive on the pages to tell a fantastic story. I found myself attached to the characters, feeling their pain and anxiously awaiting every chance I got to pick up the book and immerse myself in the pages.I read the entire trilogy in 5 days and was sad to see it end. Forgot how good this story was—how much it captivates the attention and how much you root for Peeta. I picked up the prequal in my local little free library, so thought I should reread the trilogy beforehand. I was hesitant, because life is dark enough already. But found myself pleasantly surprised. Despite the dark themes, the books were uplifting and filled with humanity. I look forward to the second one.
In a future North America, where the rulers of Panem maintain control through an annual televised survival competition pitting young people from each of the twelve districts against one another, sixteen-year-old Katniss's skills are put to the test when she voluntarily takes her younger sister's place. Students who love adventure or survival skills may really enjoy this story, as will children with strong independence or leadership skills. Katniss can be a very relatable character with a strong sense of duty, yet cunning and smart. (
