Suitable for middle school age. This children's literature book is about a young girl's journey of growing in maturity, confidence and her savvy. Every time someone in the Beaumont family turns thirteen, they get a special ability, called a savvy. The book follows a young girl who just turns thirteen. While on a mission to get to her father in the hospital, she receives her savvy and learns how to control it. I would have my students read this book in the classroom in order to support and encourage them in their journey of growing up. ( )

This book is for advanced readers. This book was very engaging. It revolves around a family who has magical abilities and how this impacts and isolates them from living a normal life. An adventure to see their injured dad leads to them making friendships, learning lessons, and learning to control their powers(savvy) and use them for good. ( )

I loved this book! I couldn't stop reading it! I like the whole kind of power thing. I thought that was cool. And their was a little romance in it which was cute, but not a whole lot that you want to barf. I really truly loved the ending. It brought tears to my eyes. This is a 10000%must read book. ( )

There’s a cartoony almost unreal quality to the tone of this which keeps things mostly fun from start to finish yet this book manages to also get serious and sensitive in the moments it needs to, particularly those scenes involving the hospitalized father.

As an adult reader, the two adults along for the ride occasionally seemed a little too unreal (though I did like them and their relationship), but I’m thinking the very thing that maybe seemed a bit unlikely at times to me, being fairly lax in their supervision and the kids being pretty much as in charge as those two adults is one of the things the actual intended audience of kid readers will most enjoy here.

They’ll also enjoy the savvys (the magic found in members of Mibs’s family when they turn 13), as did I, especially as they often tied into the characters emotions in the moment. Some of the savvys feel familiar if you read enough books with magic in them still familiarity doesn’t make them any less entertaining and grandma’s savvy felt quite unique while Mibs’s had such a wonderfully visual quality to it, the way it was written you could very much picture her savvy coming to life.

Mibs had several relationships in the book that I found appealing like her evolving friendship with Bobbi and her connection to her youngest elusive brother Samson though I was most partial to Mibs navigating Will Jr.’s crush on her. While the romantic vibes provided a couple of my favorite scenes, it should be noted for readers who aren’t fond of romance that adventure is far more prevalent throughout this story than romance ever is. It's finally here! Mibs is celebrating her 13th birthday, and she will finally find out what her savvy is. Will it be talking to animals? Seeing sounds? Only time will tell. Then tragedy strikes - her father is a car accident and is now in a coma. Will Mibs get a savvy that could save him?

This is a fun book about abilities and talents and family relationships. The growing friendship between Mibbs and Will and Bobbi is a great example of how people aren't always who they seem to be, and sometimes they just want someone to see them and like them for themselves. I'm really interested to see what Sampson's savvy is, although it seems as though he already has inklings of it showing through in his behavior, even at his younger age.

I read this as part of a mother-daughter book group, and the girls had plenty to talk about in wondering what their own savvies could be and how this is somewhat reflected in real life in the various talents individuals have. A great group read, and one that that readers who like a little light fantasy in their books will really enjoy. ( )
