Somewhat disappointing. languished in the author's heart trouble and never really got too far from it. Hardly a page went by that didn't mention his health--it got really repetitive and really held the book back from being the glorious triumph of the human spirit that it aspired to be. Maybe if I had experienced the brushed with death that John did I might appreciate it more. ( ) Doctor, Professor John Otterbacher despite being fit and active in long distance marathons suffers from a heart attack. By juggling with his private practice in Psychology, and with his wife and John Ryan, his elder son, all helping to interest and care for his two “pony-legged” young daughters, he is able to fit in time in his hard-run life for the necessary heart surgeries. Eight of them. The book describes his battling of challenges most would be hard-pressed to meet, but the author – and his strongly supporting wife Barbara – wanted more than just survival and a life. John negotiates Doctor to Doctor with his eminent Cardiac team to gain the right to restore, modify and complete an enormous sailing cruiser. With the help of many teasing and joshing friends the entire yacht is refurbished, special teenage girl needs met in the accommodation, practices suspended, houses let, furniture stored – between cardiac collapse and major open-heart surgery – the family prepare John for his ambition of cross Atlantic and Caribbean sailing. Amazingly John’s story continues, with a subtle wit, immense ‘grit’, tremendous and loving support he does finish Grace, his yacht, and sails her over 4,000 miles. Now John Ryan, his son, is progressing Hollywood film possibilities, John tours and lectures to help others face this terrible disease – little wonder then that the book was renamed for international readers to marvel and enjoy as Outrageous Grace. As the author notes, those who read the book of this families courage and long-distance sailing will; “travel with us”. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

'If you fall far enough, it's hard to know when you hit bottom. The air gets sucked out of you on the way down'. This is the uplifting story of a determined sailor refusing to give up his dream against massive odds. Just as he and his family had decided to sail a circuit of the Atlantic for a year, John is struck down with heart failure. Devastated that his plans are thwarted, he endures seven operations in eight months as procedure after procedure fails. Finally, he has to endure open heart surgery, and immediately makes plans for his 'trip'. This is John's account of drowning in heart disease, fighting back to the surface and sailing on. It begins with him flat on his back in a local health club, gasping for air. It ends 31 months and 4,000 miles later as he and his family sail their boat into Schull Harbour, Ireland. Funny, tragic, uplifting, moving and humorous - it will speak not only to timid sailors, wondering if they are brave enough to take that big step (whatever 'big' is in their own terms) but also to anyone facing immense difficulties, setbacks and even life-threatening danger in their non-sailing lives. It is an inspirational story with a message for everyone. John Otterbacher self-published in the USA, where the book was a finalist in the Best Book Award by USA Book News and won an Indie Award for Best New Non-Fiction Book of the Year.
