At last, a single volume that gathers together all of the short stories featuring Agatha Christie's most famous creation: Hercule Poirot. The dapper, mustache-twirling little Belgian with the egg-shaped head and curious mannerisms has solved some of the most puzzling crimes of the century--and, in his own humble opinion, is "probably the greatest detective in the world." In this complete collection of stories, ranging from short tales to novellas, Poirot faces violent murders, poisonings, kidnappings, and thefts--all solved with his characteristic panache. Only Agatha Christie could have devised cases worthy of Hercule Poirot's skill and "little gray cells." --… (mais)

Agatha Christie was truly the Queen of Crime. Her books and stories have been enjoyed around the world.
But I have to say, my absolute favorite recurring character of hers, is Hercule Poirot. I love his style, mannerisms, dialogue, idiosyncrasies - and those "little gray cells" that drive the investigations. I always have enjoyed the deductions, the piecing together, the reasoning, the seemingly innocuous clue tucked into a sentence somewhere along the way. Christie was a clever, clever writer.

Now I'm not much of a short story reader. But! When I saw that Harper Audio had released Hercule Poirot: The Complete Short Stories, an audiobook of 50+ Poirot stories, I knew I wanted to listen. There's 35 hours of listening just waiting for you! Most are just 30ish minutes long, but there are some longer novellas as well. The length of the short stories were perfect - eating lunch, waiting rooms, while crafting and those nights when I can't sleep. There's much satisfaction in having a case presented and solved in thirty minutes. There were some familiar cases and some I'd never read. But each and every one was a treasure.

Now, the real reason I wanted to listen - David Suchet is one of the readers! There have been many actors that have portrayed Poirot, but he is the best in my opinion. Suchet portrayed Poirot for twenty five years! Hearing his voice immediately evoked a strong mental image of the character. And knowing the voice drew me right into the stories. Suchet brings Poirot to life with his voice. He captures Christie's work easily, changing the tone, tenor and emphasis as the plot progresses. Now, as excited as I was about Suchet, I was just as excited to find that Hugh Fraser was also a narrator. Fraser played Captain Arthur Hasting, Poirot's sidekick. Again, a familiar voice was like settling in with old friends to hear a tale. Nigel Hawthorne and Isla Blair rounded out the cast. Excellent performances all round. ( )

I love Agatha Christie's storytelling, characters, and atmosphere. I have seen most of these in the Poirot series starting David Suchet and it was gratifying to read them here, and take note of the similarities and differences.

These are all such great stories and I especially enjoyed the capstone of reading the labors of Hercule Poirot. I have also listened to a significant number of these and that is also a great experience. ( )

I really love reading Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novels and short stories. For the first time all of the short stories (including the Labours of Hercules) are included in this short story collection.

This short story collection was definitely worth the price for me, all in all it was 899 pages for $11.99. This included a short foreword by Charles Todd that was only about 2 pages and then we go into each short story. At the beginning of every chapter there is a quick blurb on when the story was initially published.

There are a total of 51 short stories here and my top five favorite stories (though I did love them all) were the following:

1) The Adventure of Johnny Waverly-a father and mother come to Poirot to help when their young son is kidnapped.
2) Wasps' Nest-Poirot visits an old friend and attempts to stop a murder.
3) The Third Floor Flat-A group of friends are locked out of a flat and two men attempt to gain access by climbing through a dumbwaiter shaft. Unfortnately they find a dead woman. Poirot is on the scene and quickly resolves who murdered the woman and why.
4) Triangle at Rhodes-While on vacation Poirot attempts to warn a woman to leave the island she is staying at with her husband.
5) The Mystery of the Baghdad Chest-A dead body is found in a chest and Poirot is called upon to investigate.

I have loved Agatha Christie since I read "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" and I have to say that no matter what and how carefully I read I never get the guilty party until Poirot laids out what happened and why.

Definitely recommend to others ( )

One must like Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot to appreciate this large volume of murder mysteries. This was my grandfather's book and I kept it in memory of him. I enjoy Miss Marple more than Hercule, but the stories this this book are classic Agatha Christie. ( )

I have always been a fan of detective stories and like thousands of other people, my childhood hero was Sherlock Holmes (I think deep down, he still is my hero!). This Hercule Poirot collection was the first time I tried Poirot and I LIKED him! Hercule Poirot is an eccentric old man with such a passion towards order and rational thoughts and he has such a nice sense of humour! This fat book has 51 stories and it took me quite a long time to finish it. I would say about 26-27 stories were really good. Sad that the rest of the stories were based on the similar plots and were repetitive. Otherwise, I would have gone for a '5 Stars'. The name 'Hercule' is derived from 'Hercules'/ 'Heracles', the demigod in Greek mythology. Christie wanted to see her detective mentally as strong as Hercules physically was. Thus comes the name. Like the Greek demigod, Hercule Poirot also did 12 'grand labours' and the stories are named after the 'Labours of Hercules'. The idea is a great one, no doubt but not all the 'labours' are 'great' equally. I'd like to mention some of my favorite stories form this collection like 'Cornish Mystery', 'The Incredible Theft', 'Under Dog', 'The Capture of Cerberus' etc. One other thing I must say. Agatha Christie was a very good observer of her time. She incorporated love, murder, poison, lust, cocaine, kidnap and what not in her stories. Also her writings are very spontaneous. Like I said, she was very smart lady. So, Holmes or Poirot? I think I won't go for a comparison between these two. They both are great detectives in their own style. They both use the 'rationalization' technique. While Holmes is a reckless one, Poirot is very 'reserved'. Solving a problem sitting in his armchair, that's more like Poirot. I enjoyed the read thoroughly. Viva La Poirot! ( )
