A treasure house of the ancient tales and legends.

Pantheon has always done a wonderful job of publishing comprehensive and engaging volumes with their series of folklore works and Schwab's work carries on the tradition perfectly.

There's not much I really can say considering the stories represented here are age-old and known throughout countless generations. Rather I'll praise the thorough job done in compiling all the stories. There's no need to jump from book to book anymore when studying the different tales or history making it wonderful for a reference as well as entertainment. The language it's presented in isn't stuffy like so many anthologies of mythology tend to be making a classic subject very approachable. ( )

Todos hemos oído hablar de Ulises y sus singulares aventuras, o del Caballo de Troya, que sentenció una guerra, de la trágica historia de Edipo, quien en su intento de liberarse de la profecía del oráculo sólo se acerca más a su fatal destino, y tal vez de Orestes, quien vengó la muerte de su padre y fue brutalmente castigado, o bien del vellocino de oro, que marcaría el destino de Jasón y Medea, y el músico Orfeo, quien rescata a su esposa Eurídice de los infiernos para perderla de nuevo y de manera definitiva.

Estos y otros célebres mitos recogidos en la presente obra componen la mitología clásica, griega y romana, o grecorromana, puesto que en lo que a mitología se refiere ambas forman una continuidad. Esta mitología constituye uno de los ámbitos más ricos de todo nuestro patrimonio cultural, y aunque haya perdido la dimensión religiosa, conserva toda su carga poética y dramática. El carácter de los personajes tiene muy a menudo valor arquetípico para la humanidad, al extremo de que, en su inmediatez vívida, permite comprender aspectos psicológicos y espirituales mucho mejor que los conceptos abstractos. Además de este valor de conocimiento, la mitología fascina aún por la la intensidad de sus aventuras.

Gustav Schawb (Stuttgart, 1792 – 1850) fue un escritor, pastor religioso y editor alemán. Estudió en la Universidad de Tubingen y, durante un viaje por el norte de Alemania en 1913, conoció entre otras personalidades a Goethe. En 1841 se estableció definitivamente en Stutgard, dónde fue pastor y consejero de educación.

Ah yes - the Greek Myths. According to the introduction in this book, this is a book meant for reading, not accuracy. The author mixed the different versions of the stories from different regions to create what is in this book. So, the stories might not be the most accurate as to original content, but they are well written. The translation was well done, and I really enjoyed reading them.

Some stories I knew, but didn't know the full version (Pandora's Box, for example). Others were new to me. I found the re-telling of the Iliad to be a bit drawn out, but good to read. Its a story I haven't read before. The retelling of the Odyssey was nice re-read. Reading this version of it gave me a better understanding of the ancient world.

I highly recommend this book for people with an interest in Greek Mythology or students who are passed the Percy Jackson books and need something a bit heavier.
