Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal court by his father's gruff stableman. He is treated like an outcast by all the royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him secretly tutored in the arts of the assassin. For in Fitz's blood runs the magic Skill--and the darker knowledge of a child raised with the stable hounds and rejected by his family. As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts, Fitz is growing to manhood. Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission. And though some regard him as a threat to the throne, he may just be the key to the survival of the kingdom.… (mais)

The Crystal Cave de Mary Stewart (LiddyGally)
LiddyGally: Both "autobiograhical" accounts of the life of a man with powers of a magical kind, told from boyhood to manhood. Compelling writing makes for a great read and memorable story!

NovaStalker: Both books that have no feel good quality about them at all. If you finish them and their respective series and don't hate life, love, everyone and want to kill yourself you're either incredibly well adjusted or a sociopath. That's a recommendation.

The Book of Unholy Mischief: A Novel de Elle Newmark (mene)
mene: Both books have a similar setting: Told by a narrator when he is already old and has lived his life, he talks about his childhood. Both main characters lived in the "important building" of the city (though in Assassin's Apprentice it's a fantasy world and in The Book of Unholy Mischief it's Venice in Italy), both boys go to town every now and then to meet his friends (and a girl), and both are apprentices of someone/something they cannot tell anyone else (except for a few people). Both books contain a bit of magic, though of a different kind.… (mais)

Enjoyed this whole trilogy. Good character development and liked that point of view stayed with one character. Looking forward to read more from Robin Hobb. ( )

First book of the Farseer Trilogy by American author Robin Hobb. This was an enjoyable story of fantasy and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. The bastard son is dropped off at the door and no one knows what to do with him though there are those that want to do away with him but others who want him trained. Fitz has the ability to communicate with animals but can he be trained in the skill. ( )

3 stars.

[Buddy-read with Giovanna and Sibil]

I liked the content of this book: the plot, the characters, the setting,... everything, but the writing. It was far too descriptive, imo, and somehow deprived me of the pleasure of reading, making the narration slow and boring. I found myself skipping the lines looking for dialogues or interesting events, because overall I didn't enjoy it very much. I think this is in part due to the fact that the narrator was telling his memories and not actually taking part in the events. But I must confess that the situation got better through the second part.
Two nice persons gave me the power to go on and they were Giovanna and Sibil, and also Lys. I know that she has been looking after us from afar :D
I would have thrown the book out the window without you.
I just hope that Hobb's recent books aren't so descriptive/boring. In any case, I'm sure I will read the next installment to follow Fitz'story, but not in the immediate future. ( )

Second time reading the Assassin's Apprentice and I'm taking my 4 star rating up to 5. Hobb is an imaginative world builder and as I was reading this book my mind kept taking me back to other books in the series and how this world continued to expand. A fantastic start to the adventures of the beloved FitzChivalry and the Fool. ( )

This is the first book written by Hobbs. It is the beginning of a long relationship with FitzChiverly Farseer.

Fitz is a royal bastard. Dumped at the doorstep of his father at the age of 6. He is taken in, and handed over to the Stable Master, Burrich. A warm, loving relationship is formed, until other people begin to infringe on Fitz's life. It becomes apparent that Fitz is a "carrier" of both magics of the Relm, The Will and The Skill. King Shrewd , his grandfather, brings Fitz into service to be trained as an Assassin. The story becomes a coming of age story, along the way there are wonderful characters who enter and impact Fitz's world.

I am in the midst of another of Hobb's trilogy's The Soldier Son Trilogy Bundle, and I must say the writing in that one is much better. For me this first book of her's dragged at points, but I know her writing skills improve so I will continue the series.

This is a book for those of you who like a little magic, and character driven plots. It is believable and the characters are lovable ( )

Despite some titles similar to those of the original 6, the French version of the Farseer books splits the 2 trilogies into 13 books. This is 1 of 13 and it is the only book that is exactly the same as the original one. Make sure you combine only with identically split parts of the series.
