Leslie and her mom, Sally (the author — the book is more or less autobiographical) are a close mother-daughter pair. Mom is blind, and she always wears a pair of glamorous sunglasses to protect her eyes. Leslie is elementary-school-age and though she’s been aware of her mom being blind since she was just four months old (a fascinating fact), she’s still learning why her mother being blind makes a difference. Though this book may be a bit dated, it still read it really fluidly and sweetly. My critique is that it uses some dated language, like handicapped and “normal people”. I wish this book could simply be updated to have current language. The book does educate about blindness but in a way that also inclusive. I loved the photographs, and how the mom’s outfit changes in every photo. ( )

An older book but very relevant and applicable information. The story is about a child and her mother, Sally who is blind. It is told from her daughter's perspective and how not only the mother had to make significant adjustment due to her blindness but also her family members. A great short story chock-full of practical life changing instances for a family who love their mother and sees her still. Love this simplicity of this book and the picture illustrations of this family. ( )

This is Sally Hobart Alexander's story of her becoming blind from a disease at 26, but it's told from her daughter's perspective. It's sad and happy at the same time. As my eyes worsen every year, I appreciate daily the importance and value of vision. ( )

This book is told from a young girls point of view on her blind mother. She describes things that she still does with her mother but are impacted by her mothers disability and how she loves her mom through all she does that may embarrass her at times. This is a good informational book because it is about a real family and their experiences. I would use this for primary and intermediate. The illustrations are black and white pictures of the family. This book is a story about the author, who is blind. It is told from her daughter's point of view. The point is to show that even though her mom does things differently, she is still the same as other mothers. She might need help doing things, but she does a lot on her own and a lot normally. This book shows that with family and love anything is possible. The daughter was so in love with her mom,very mature, and helpful. I would read this to my class when talking about disabilities. ( )
