Fabulous tactical story of the battle of Trevilian Station. Author did a significant amount of research esp with original sources/memoirs from participants. Somewhat disturbing accounts of wounds suffered in battle by various participants, and very memorable tale of a cav trooper who killed himself rather than continue in the pre battle portion of the raid.
Great stories of the regimental commanders and their personal actions.

Samaria Church covered in great detail also. Can't wait to go walk the grounds of these two battlefields. Definitely not getting rid of this book. I think Wittenberg is a fabulous writer.

Author is somewhat critical of Sheridan, who never failed to praise himself. Doing a little research, I found that there were a number of Union cavalry raids around Richmond in 1864, none of which ended up any better than the Trevilian affair. Seems like a significant omission, and I don't recall any if them being mentioned. Those first person accounts are from 'Battles & Leaders of CW.' The Kilpatrick-Dahlgren raid was the most interesting of those actions.
