Very stylish art, but lacking compelling characters or satisfying plot. ( ) A short, black-and-white graphic novel about a computer programmer and his jerky friend who are returning from a cabin in the Cascades when North Korea nukes the city of Seattle, and their camping trip turns into a post-apocalyptic survival scenario. Things get very ugly, very quickly. In his introduction, author Peter Bagge says he wanted to reject the kind of survivalist fantasy you sometimes get in such stories and "write a much more honest and realistic imagining of what things would be like for someone like me placed in such a situation, with little or no survival skills." He definitely avoids romanticizing the scenario, but I'm not entirely sure how "realistic" this alternative is. It's all a bit stilted, with some of the situations and characters a little too contrived or cliche to really capture the "morality goes out the window in a survival crisis" theme he's going for in a truly effective way. It's not bad, but I was hoping for something with a bit more subtlety. Peter Bagge's Apocalypse Nerd is a strange bird. It's the story of a nerdy Seattle based computer programmer who works at "the Soft" who, along with his friend, struggles to survive a North Korean nuclear attack on the Pacific Northwest. The book chronicles the protagonist's descent into barbarism. He starts out typically nerdy (vegetarian, a great indoorsman, etc.) but by the end, he is a gun-toting, meat eating survivalist who resorts to killing the innocent. The drawings are pretty disturbing in and of themselves, but the plot makes the whole reading experience unsettling. This isn't for everyone -- I mean it when I say that this has disturbing themes -- but if you enjoy tales of post-apocalyptic mayhem, then you should check this one out. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
