Biography & Autobiography. Cooking & Food. Essays. Nonfiction. HTML:

A delectable mix of essays and recipes from the critically acclaimed writer: "As much memoir as cookbook and as much about eating as cooking" (The New York Times Book Review).
In this delightful celebration of food, family, and friends, one of America's most cherished kitchen companions shares her lifelong passion for cooking and entertaining. Interweaving essential tips and recipes with hilarious stories of meals both delectable and disastrous, Home Cooking is a masterwork of culinary memoir and an inspiration to novice cooks, expert chefs, and food lovers everywhere.
From veal scallops sautéed on a hot plate in her studio apartment to home-baked bread that is both easy and delicious, Colwin imparts her hard-earned secrets with wit, empathy, and charm. She advocates for simple dishes made from fresh, organic ingredients, and counsels that even in the worst-case scenario, there is always an elegant solution: dining out. Interesting to read this now. It strikes me as being a bit dated; the foods she eats and the ways they're prepared. But in the most important sense it's not at all dated--Colwin's passion for food and family, and the way she shares her stories continues to sparkle. ( )

This is M.F.K. Fisher, watered-down. Essays on gastronomy and eating, but rather crude, simple and lacking in nuance. ( )

I love Colwin's writing- her novel "Happy All the Time" would be on my desert island list! And she writes brilliantly and beautifully about food, and family and friends, and the connections among them all. It's a joy to read, even if one does not cook from it.

But oh! how can anyone resist cooking from it??? The recipes are straightforward and accessible, and generally pretty easy; Colwin is fond of soups, for instance, which once put together cook all on their own- freeing up the cook for other pastimes. And I really do want to try her approach to roasted chicken, which she cooks long and at a low temp.

While she died in 1992, sadly, much of her writing anticipates our more normalized concerns about agribusiness and anticipates the farm-to-table movement.

Very highly recommended, if you like reading about food and family life, or read cookbooks for fun, or just want some delicious and easy recipes! ( )

Laurie Colwin (1944 - 1992) is the sort of writer who makes you feel you are a friend (or at least, want to be). So sadly, she died in her 40s but her legacy is a couple of books full of recipes which will become regulars on the repetoire of anyone who tries them. Beautiful essays precede each recipe. The essay titles alone beg reading : 'Why I Love Cookbooks', 'The Case of the Mysterious Flatbread', 'Turkey Angst' or 'Jam Anxiety'. She also wrote a number of novels.

Just as good as its predecessor -- you'll read it for the sheer joy of sharing her passion for food and for visiting an old friend. Recipes are iffy, however, but the warmth and affection that the author share more than compensates. ( )
