This is not India 'lite'. This a corrupt, dirty, poverty stricken India inhabited by some very unpleasant people. Our hero, who operates under several aliases during the course of the book, has to commit the ultimate crime to make something of his life and he tells his tale with such honesty and with such a dry humour that you can not help but route for him. I also loved the style, written as (very long) series of letters. Can not recommend highly enough but not sure what the Indian government, the business classes or the police made of it. His earnest yet realistic view of his station is overtaken only by his enthusiasm for a Chinese official soon to visit his home city. Compelling and unique prose. A dark story for sure; worth reading to learn this on-the-ground view of poverty and corruption in India. I did not care for the epistolary pretense, but that's easy enough to look past. It is such an interesting story and one of those books I found myself thinking about when I was not reading it. I can understand why this one was an award winner. It is the nickname of our hero, a servant who observes and imitates his masters, to become an entrepreneur. The entire novel is written in the form of a letter to a Chinese official planning a visit to India, and it exposes India's corruption and mistreatment of servants. White Tiger is the gripping tale of what the downtrodden will do to survive. It should strike fear in the hearts of exploiters everywhere. I found it much more engaging than most of the other Indian novels on the Booker list. My reviews are getting shorter, as is my time to finish the Booker winners before the end of 2018! Balram zoekt jaren naar de sleutel om vrij te komen, terwijl het deurtje van de figuurlijke kooi open staat. Het vergt radicale stappen, waar je mee omgaat, word je mee besmet. De witte tijger is een plezier om te lezen, gaat uiteraard verder dan het filmscript en is genadeloos ontnuchterend en scherp. (
