Twenty-thousand brilliantly colored corals, plants and animals (more sea creatures than anywhere else in the ocean) call a coral reef home, but marine biologists think coral reefs have been around since dinosaurs roamed the early over 400 million years ago.

So how have corals survived all of this time? What do they eat? Why does their color intensify at night? And just what is life like in a coral reef? Gail Gibbons' will take readers on an undersea adventure as her informative, child-friendly writing style and her clear and detailed illustrations reveal the mysteries of coral reefs.

Gibbons book describes everything about coral reefs. She describes what they are, where they are found and the fish that are found around them. You can learn about the three different coral reefs there are in the world, the Fringe, Barrier, and Atoll reefs. The different parts of the coral reefs is broken down, how they are formed is described, and most importantly you learn to NEVER disturb a coral reef. Each fish illustrated is labeled as well as all parts of the coral reefs shown. There is even pronunciations next to some of the names. This book is bright and beautiful and captures everything you need to know about coral reefs. Highly recommend to aquatic lovers! ( )

This was great, informational book for students to read and use for projects on the coral reef. The pictures of the fish were amazing as well. I thought that the information in the book was detailed enough for a young student to understand be able to gather enough information on the subject. It makes me want to visit the coral reef and snorkel, but I'm a scary about being in the water after watching JAWS. ( )

This book is about coral reefs and has many interesting facts. It says that marine biologists believe that coral reefs have existed for 400 million years even when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Today it is an active environment that is home to 20,000 kinds of brightly coloured corals and animals. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is so large that you can see it from space. It also tells you how the reefs grow, the different textures that they have, and the life that lives at these reefs. It explains the nighttime and daytime reefs and reef zones.
