Well, if ever a person was unprepared for "Gantenbein", it was me. Even having read that one reviewer referred to it as an "anti-novel or non-novel", I was still flummoxed. First let's give credit where credit is due. "Gantenbein" is an exceptionally well written work. The author captures persons, situations, and relationships with precision and insight. The work is also incredibly inventive as reviewers have observed. The plot, yes the plot. There's the rub. The work contains numerous sometimes parallel, sometimes perpendicular stories. The book is like a whirlpool floating down a river. It moves along but what that "it" actually is, is ever allusive. At one point the author refers to an experience in search of a narrative. Overall the work tests the limits of "story" itself. But, the work is in no sense absurdist. It is also not "post modern" in the sense we usually understand. One could say it is a work that plays with creativity itself.

So, is it a proverbial "good read" in my eyes? The book can certainly be tedious at times. Once the reader gets the idea of what the author is doing with his "story" there is a tendency to say "enough already, I get it". Another aspect that can get irksome is the content of many of the topics of external and internal conversations. The book was written in the mid 1960's and, at times, that shows. That's a not so delicate way of saying it is a tad dated.

Should you read it? At the risk of being trite, I would say it's worth the experience. Also, if you are student of literature (or just very interested) it certainly is a work that has a place in the development of the modern novel.

Ein Mann, von seiner Partnerin wegen eines anderen Mannes verlassen, sitzt in seiner Wohnung und versucht, mit diesem Verlust fertig zu werden, indem er sich wechselweise in verschiedene Identitäten versetzt:
Da ist zunächst Gantenbein, ein Mann, der nach einem Unfall vorgibt, blind zu sein, damit die Menschen sich ihm gegenüber unverstellt zeigen, und der eine Beziehung mit einer Frau namens Lila hat, die ihm untreu ist. Dann gibt es den Wissenschaftler Enderlin, der einen Ruf nach Harvard erhält, aber nicht annimmt, und der eine Beziehung mit Lila anfängt. Die dritte Person ist der Architekt Sovoboda, dessen Frau Lila eine Beziehung mit Enderlin anfängt.
In vielen eher assoziativ verbundenen Abschnitten greift der Autor diese drei Figuren immer wieder auf. Verbindendes Element ist die Frau, Lila, die mit einem Mann zusammenlebt und sich in einen anderen verliebt. Hauptmotiv ist die Eifersucht: Indem er in diese verschiedenen Rollen schlüpft, durchlebt der Ich-Protagonist verschiedene Möglichkeiten, mit seiner Eifersucht umzugehen. Dies zeigt sich besonders eindrucksvoll in einzelnen Abschnitten, in denen sich das „Ich“ aus der jeweiligen Hauptfigur abspaltet um quasi mit sich selbst zu kommunizieren - und damit wiederum verschiedene Möglichkeiten des Empfindens und Handelns eröffnet.
Ein faszinierender Text, der um die Fragen "Was wäre, wenn ...? " und "Wer bin ich?" bzw. "Wer könnte ich sein, wenn ich nicht "Ich" wäre?" kreist und sich eigentlich jeder Inhaltsangabe entzieht.
Daher hier ein Versuch einer "Inhaltsangabe" in Zitaten:

„Ein Mann hat eine Erfahrung gemacht, jetzt sucht er die Geschichte dazu – man kann nicht leben mit einer Erfahrung, die ohne Geschichte bleibt, scheint es, und manchmal stelle ich mir vor, ein andrer habe genau die Geschichte meiner Erfahrung…“
„Es ist wie ein Sturz durch den Spiegel, mehr weiß einer nicht, wenn er wieder erwacht, ein Sturz wie durch alle Spiegel, und nachher, kurz darauf, setzt die Welt sich wieder zusammen, als wäre nichts geschehen.“
„Einzelne empfinden ein solches Erbarmen mit ihm, daß sie, um Worte zu finden, die ihm eine Vorstellung geben von der Weihe des Ortes, selber zu sehen anfangen. “
„Ich wechsle den Beruf von Lila.“
„Zum ersten Mal meint er wie ein Außenstehender, der nicht durch Gefühle gebremst wird, die Zukunft zu wissen, genauer gesagt: nicht die Zukunft, aber das Ende einer Vergangenheit, die in keine Gegenwart mehr mündet.“

„Ich bin blind. Ich weiß es nicht immer, aber manchmal. Dann wieder zweifle ich, ob die Geschichten, die ich mir vorstellen kann, nicht doch mein Leben sind. Ich glaub’s nicht. Ich kann nicht glauben, daß das, was ich sehe, schon der Lauf der Welt ist.“ ( )

A real brain-twister! I didn't succeed in following every line but it was compelling with interesting musings on identity and perception. Of the two imagined identities, I found Gantenbein more intelligible than Enderlin. Definitely one for re-reading. I prefer the original title, A Wilderness of Mirrors.

Update: Second Reading

If any book deserves a second look it's this one. I was startled on first reading, but it becomes much clearer now. The narrative mirrors the process of invention as the narrator comes up with the possible identities of a mysterious suicide he is witness to. The twin identities eventually overlap as the story progresses and the social self is contrasted with other possible identities in a way that reminded me of Pirandello. It's a fascinating book and compares favourably with his more famous novels. There's a dark humour throughout and a mercurial quality to the layout of the narrative while still remaining accessible. I bought two books this morning I'd really like to start on...but first I'm going to pick this up again for the first time in a week.
