This book is a continuation of H. Beam Piper's Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen written by two other authors. Had Piper lived, he could have made this a great and successful series. This book shows how much eagerness there was on the part of fans to see the story continue. By now Kalvan (ex Calvin Morrison) is a great king and facing a huge renewed threat from the priests of Styphon's House. The tension grows and climaxes with two great battles that are told in gripping detail.
Not as good as the original, in my opinion, but that may be in part because the drama of trooper Calvin Morrison becoming a great war leader in an alternate world isn't there--and can't be. It's also twice the length of the original and tends to drag after a while. Still, it's a very good read and worth finding. ( )

The first of all the requisites for a man's success as a leader is that he be perfectly brave. When a general is animated by a truly martial spirit and can communicate it to his soldiers, he may commit faults, but he will gain victories and secure deserved laurels. - Jomini: The Art of War

The Great King sprinkled sand on the last few lines, then shook it off, slid all three pages into a pile, weighted it down with the wine cup and jug, and blew out the candle.
