This is a good brief overview of the women’s suffrage movement in Great Britain with a focus on the early 20th century. Although it traces the history of various bills introduced into Parliament in the 19th and 20th centuries for social reforms (including women’s suffrage), its primary emphasis is on the various women’s groups working for suffrage, including the two main ones – the NUWSS (National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies – the suffragists) and WSPU (Women’s Social and Political Union – the suffragettes) – but also discussing local or specialized groups.

There is a glossary at the end, giving brief succinct definitions of many general political terms such as “bill,” “deputation” and “Home Rule” including terms specific to the suffrage movement such as “feminist,” “suffragist” and “suffragette.”

Of particular value are the numerous photographs including those of the major women involved, and the case studies of four women involved in the movement.
