It wouldnt take long to extend the life span double or triple the present." Amschel Mayer said, "At this stage progress is faster with the generations closer together. A man is pressed when he knows he has only twenty or thirty years of peak efficiency. We on Earth are inclined to settle back and take life as it comes; you younger men are all past the century mark, but none have bothered to get married as yet." Summary:
Man must expand. Mankind must reach out to the stars. Seeding the stars, Man puts down colonies on multiple planets with small groups. These small groups are allowed to lie fallow for a millenium. Then, Earth sends out big brothers to shepherd the growing colonies back into the commonwealth of man. No one bothered to ask if these colonies a thousand years down the road of history wanted to rejoin the wider community of man.

Space. Mankind’s future destiny in space.

Favorite Character:
In the first act, I liked Chessman. But as the story went along and he began to exhibit more Stalin-esque characteristics, I fell out of love with the character.
Least Favorite Character:
Plekhanov who sees himself as a Marx or Lenin figure.
The Feel:
Makes a nice commentary on the people discovering lands where other people already live and on advanced civilizations lording it over less advanced ones.
Favorite Scene:
When Plekhanov oversteps his bounds and tries to interfere in military operations and discovers exactly how far bluster will get him on a world where the power of the military man is growing as opposed to the social structure that his team left Earth with.
The comeuppance is well done.
Pacing:
Great pacing on this story.
Hmm Moments:
The two planetary teams start off belligerent toward one another and continue to grow more. Instead of readying for a reunion with the greater galactic community of men, they appear to be headed toward an interplanetary war between the two inhabitable planets.
Amshel is going to follow Plehanhov into “retirement” before too many more pages are done.
I can’t imagine Earth is going to be too pleased with the two teams sent to develop the industrialization of the 2 planets when they finally make contact again.
