2424 To Shining Sea: A History of the United States Navy 1775-1991, by Stephen Howarth (read 29 Nov 1991) This is a magnificent book. It starts slow and I did not think his account of the Navy in the Revolution was that great but it became better and better and its account of Pearl Harbor and the Second World War was absorbing and inspiring reading. It comes right up to Jan 16, 1991. The author is an Englishman but he does very well and is not critical of the U.S. I enjoyed this book tremendously. It seems the best thing I've read in its field in some time. ( )
