This is the story of the life of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. The book opens up with Neil landing the lunar capsule whilst the computer is over loaded. Then it zooms back all the way to when he was born. It tells how Armstrong used to build models of planes. These planes became rather expensive, so his parents started making him buy his own, so Neil got a job at a local bakery of 25 cents an hour. Then it tells how Neil got his pilot's license at only 16. Whilst driving, Neil saw a biplane get caught on a high wire and crash, but Neil continued to fly. When Neil got excepted into NASA, he was excepted to fly on the Gemini 8 mission (The first mission where they would do a space doc into an other ship.) When the time came, they docked fine, but then the ship started to spin. Neil had to stabilize the ship, but, unfortunately, this meant that they would have to fly down to earth. The ship landed somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. For six months Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins trained for the Apollo 11 mission, which, at that stage, was guaranteed to land on the moon (unless something happened). On July 18 1969 The Apollo 11 launched into space. for three days the Apollo 11 traveled on to the moon. On the 20th Neil and Aldrin went into the lunar capsule to head straight for the moon. Neil guided it to the moon and it landed safely. For the next two hours the collected soil, rocks, buried a memorial of Earth, and planted an American flag on the moon. The docked back into the Apollo and headed home. After that Neil stayed quiet, he didn't like the popularity. He barely showed to parades that were commemorating him.
I kind of liked this book, but it wasn't my favorite. It did provide with very good info about Armstrong, and the things he did. I liked how they described the way that he landed on the moon and also the Gemini 8. However, it did get indeed boring. For example, when it was talking about the after math of the landing it just got so boring. I mean if you like this book I'm fine with that, I just don't like it that much. If you do have a friend who likes space and non fiction, this should be a good book for them. ( )
