Just war, pacifism, weapons of mass destruction, war on terror, preemptive war. These phrases highlight recent world events that have brought questions about the morality of war into sharp relief. Instead of advocating a particular approach to war, War and Christian Ethics offers a variety of Christian perspectives, enabling readers to make up their own minds about what they believe. Excellent primary source reader dealing with the various Christian traditions of war and peace. Holmes certainly leans to the classical just war tradition; therefore, his selections reflect elements of his own position and only give a limited perspective on Christian pacifism (although there is admittedly more material on just war than pacifism in the Christian tradition).

A helpful element of this second edition is that Holmes has added selections to address war and peace within the contemporary, post-9/11 culture. Overall, this is an excellent book that serves as a great resource for those interested in war and peace from a Christian perspective. ( )
