HTML:NATIONAL BESTSELLER ? ??Steven Pressfield brings the battle of Thermopylae to brilliant life.???Pat Conroy
At Thermopylae, a rocky mountain pass in northern Greece, the feared and admired Spartan soldiers stood three hundred strong. Theirs was a suicide mission, to hold the pass against the invading millions of the mighty Persian army.
Day after bloody day they withstood the terrible onslaught, buying time for the Greeks to rally their forces. Born into a cult of spiritual courage, physical endurance, and unmatched battle skill, the Spartans would be remembered for the greatest military stand in history??one that would not end until the rocks were awash with blood, leaving only one gravely injured Spartan squire to tell… (mais)
So much different than most of my reading and so good! Character development, story, history (presumably accurate), and terrific insight into men, women, and children of an era that is largely unfamiliar to me.
The results of the Battle of Thermopylae (this story) and the following Battle of Salamis (see Carnage and Culture by Hanson) may be the reason that Western Civilization exists today. Overstated? I don't think so. ( )
This is a powerful book. I can't comment on the historical accuracy of the book, though it seems Steven Pressfield has taken great pains for authenticity. This is a great treatise on honor and duty, on the needs and responsibilities of society, and of the brutality (necessary or not) of war. ( )
Really fascinating novel of the Spartans and other Greeks and the last stand of the 300 at the narrow pass of Thermopylae in the late 400s BC in their fight against the Persians and allies of Xerxes. Offers good insight into their training, philosophy, and virtues of brotherhood, honor, etc. Some foul language and very bloody fighting could be a drawback for some readers. I would definitely read it again. ( )

Although extraordinary valor was displayed by the entire corps of Spartans and Thespians, yet bravest of all was declared the Spartan Dienekes. It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by a native of Trachis that the Persian archers were so numerous that, when they fired their volleys, the mass of arrows blocked out the sun. Dienekes, however, quite undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh, "Good. Then we'll have our battle in the shade." ---HERODOTUS, THE HISTORIES
The fox knows many tricks; the hedgehog one good one. ---ARCHILOCHUS
