What a strange little book this is! ( )

This comic novel encapsulates everything about Chesterton that appealed to Borges. It's hilariously funny and surreal, with the author's animus against pomposity in full force. Needless to say, the prose is excellent.

Chesterton claimed that "the normal was abnormal," that modern life forced people into paradoxical situations. For example, we are able to experience the glory of the highest pride and the awe of the meekest humility at the same time. Chesterton saw this as a manifestation of Original Sin and that a return to innocence was only possible for holy fools, such as this novel's central character. ( )

It might have been a good Father-Brown-like short story: the far-fetchedness of the plot excusable on account of the moral. Unnaturally, this novel just heaps more and more far-fetchedness while adding more morals only sparsely, and does it so in a way making, say, Walter Scott look like a succinct author in comparison. Este libro narra el caso de Innocent Smith, un hombre común, aunque algo extraño, cuya visión del mundo es pura y no está manchada por el cinismo. Su encanto infantil seduce a la señora Mary Gray, inquilina de la Casa Beacon, y la convence para que se case con él. El resto de los huéspedes de la pensión opinan que la señora Gray ha perdido la cabeza, pues apenas conoce al señor Smith, por lo que deciden investigar el pasado del singular pretendiente en busca de asuntos escabrosos. En esta novela se basó la excelente película, considerada ya de culto, Media hora más contigo (Desert Hearts,1985) de la directora Donna Deitch. Un clásico del cine lésbico. Una novela inteligente y absolutamente creíble Próspera empresaria, Kasey Hollander se dedica a la construcción. Lleva una vida retirada y centrada en su trabaje como rehabilitadora de fincas. Decide contratar a Connie para que lleve la contabilidad y las dos congenian inmediatamente. Sin embargo, desde que su última novia la dejó herida y hum.

Příběh, u něhož je zcela absurdní ptáti se po jeho reálnosti. Chestertonova fantasie pracuje na plné obrátky a vrší jeden paradox za druhým. Po pravdě řečeno se mi ovšem daleko více zamlouvají "Ohromné maličkosti" a "Obrany", kde jsou mnohé, zde v příběhu skryté myšlenky řečeny přímo. ( )
