This wide-ranging journey through the history and highlights of the world's poetry covers everything from epics and odes to nonsense verse and haikus, and includes a full-length CD! Hey there! I'm Professor Driscoll, and I'll be your guide as we explore the wonderful world of poetry, a fun and exciting place where anything can happen through the magic power of words. Get ready to visit imaginary lands filled with fascinating creatures like "Jabberwocks", or to travel backwards in time over 2,000 years to ancient Greece, or to be transported to far-away places like mountains, meadows, or big city streets. On the first part of our journey we'll get to know all the different types of poetry with their weird and wonderful names like lyric, haiku, sonnet, and villanelle. During the second part we'll get to meet some of the most famous poets of all time. Brilliant men and women such as William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, and many more, who have used their imaginations to create all of the wonderful places and people we'll read about in this book. Best of all, we can listen to the poems being read aloud as we read along on the page. Every time you see the PLAY TRACK symbol you'll know it's time to listen to the CD and hear the poetry come to life. So, turn the page. Turn on your CD player. Turn on your imagination and let's be on our way!… (mais)

This book would be good for intermediate level aged kids as well as middle school. This book is about the different types of poetry with many examples of famous poems to go along with the type of poetry presented. Some examples of the types of poetry represented are nursery rhymes, nonsense verse, the villanelle, the limerick, the haiku, narrative verse, lyric verse, the ballad, the pastoral, the sonnet, free verse, and poems peculiar. This book would be good to use in the classroom for an introduction to poetry as well as a reference for kids to use. ( )

such a nice little classroom poetry book that includes all your famous poets like Shakespeare. I used this on a unit on nature and backyard science in conjunction with The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett. A fun little book to teach out of or just for kids to look at and get a first feel of poetry. ( )

Poetry is not always an easy subject to learn and to teach because many people find themselves overwhelmed or even bored. “A Child’s Introduction to Poetry” by Michael Driscoll is an interesting medium of which to introduce poetry.

This book is broken up into two parts. The first half talks about the different kinds of poetry that people write. For instance it talks about nursery rhymes, nonsense verse, the villanelle, the ballad etc. While the second half of the book discusses famous poets and what type of poetry they have written. What makes this book unique is that it has an accompanied CD with it. On this CD are sixty-four poems that are read to you as you read along with the book. The experience of poetry changes when you hear other people read it to you. At the very beginning you are introduced to Professor Driscoll who is to be your guide through the book. His introduction at the beginning and the language he uses is very informal, so as to make children think that they are in a relaxed setting rather than a very formal one. I like the fact that the poems in this book are not all easy ones, with easy vocabulary. It makes you think outside the box a little, but still provides glossary terms and fun factoids so that you do not lose interest. This is a fun way for children and even adults to learn about the basics of poetry. ( )

Appropriate grade level for this book would be PreK to 8th grade, this book has a large genre of not only poems with harder vocabulary but also Nursery rhymes and rhyming words as well. This book hasn't received any awards. This book entails a lot of different things including rhyming words, nursery rhymes and poems. This book has poems from different parts of the world and are also longer in length and have harder vocabulary. Uses in the classroom for this book would be for the children to read the poems out loud in front of the class, or have a play where the children act out some of the poems.

I love this book! It is perfect for my poetry unit because it has sections of different types of poems such as the sonnet, the ballad and haiku.

The second part of the book highlights various poets such as Walt Whitman and Maya Angelou.

Another bonus about this book is that there is a CD with all of the poems being read.

Right now my students have to do a poetry scavenger hunt and this book will be perfect for them to find different poetic styles and devices.

What a find! ( )
