What is overlanding? Wikipedia states, "Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, it is accomplished with mechanized off-road-capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping. It often lasts for extended periods of time (months to years) and spans international boundaries." Overlanding did not originate in America, and it is a little different here. You would be hard-pressed to find a bicycle out in the desert, and most people don't go overlanding for quite that long. However, the spirit of the activity is the same. Do you want to give overlanding a try? Great! You will need some gear. In The Overlanding Vehicle Builder's Guide, veteran racer, off-roader, and journalist Don Alexander provides a terrific overview of what to consider when building your overlanding rig. This includes the planned duration of the trip, the number of people in your party, how far off the beaten path you want to go, and the creature comforts you require. Understanding those wants and needs shapes what gear you need for the best experience. Covered are the strengths and weaknesses of the types of vehicles themselves, modifications to the vehicles to make them more capable, accessories (lighting, camping gear, food and water storage, etc.), and equipment for trail mishaps and recovery. Driving techniques and trail rules and etiquette are also included. If you are ready to build a rig or just want to know more about the hobby, this book is a great guide to help you get started.… (mais)

As an Overlanding enthusiast, I found this book to encompass the full range of Overlander build options, while being segmented to the various levels of enthusiasts that may pick this book up. That is to say, regardless of your level of interest there is material and subjects found in this book that will appeal to the "weekend warrior" as well as the "all in" Overlander that may even live/work full time in off road locations. It was really nice to see all of the possible Overlanding equipment options in a single manual. Additionally, I especially appreciated Chapter 1, covering the basics of Overlanding consequences and responsibilities, for those that are just beginning to venture off road into the Overlanding lifestyle. I highly recommend this exceptionally well-crafted book. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. July 16, 2024

This handbook is excellent. It covers everything you might need to consider when building an overlapping vehicle. It covers suspension, steering, brakes, tires and wheels, electrical and electronic even engines an winches. It has loads of pictures and details.

Book seems to have two different purposes in mind. For the newbie it is a great introduction to the vehicles and etiquette of overlanding. For the diehard rock crawler it provides detailed roadmap of options to modify your vehicle for more extreme trails.

Note the advice given is centering more around Jeep like 4WD vehicles and does not really apply to general vanlife or modified vans let alone to RVs. Recommended for anyone seeking a broad color photo introduction to the options for exploring backcountry trails via Jeeps or 4WD Pickups. ( )

This book is excellent introduction for first-time off-roaders. All options are explored, from taking your daily driver slightly off the beaten path, to constructing a rig to climb mountains. As usual with CarTech books, excellent photos abound. ( )

This is another excellent CarTech publication. Color photo rich, this guide to overlanding starts with the do’s and don’ts of trail etiquette and general safety then moves on to selecting an appropriate vehicle for building/using. Up to date for now, hopefully the fast pace of automotive change will not make the guide seem outdated anytime soon. Lots of useful info and would be a great resource for van-life in addition to overlanding. Great to have this resource in print!
