Son Holland arrived in the Louisiana penal camp determined not to spend the rest of his days suffering in a chain gang - but he didn't imagine for one minute that in order to escape he would need to kill a man. Terrified for his life, he flees the state across the river to Texas, taking with him a beautiful Indian squaw and a fellow prisoner. And as they make their way towards General Houston's infamous Texas Rangers they find themselves in the midst of the final tragic battle for the Alamo.TWO FOR TEXAS has all the lyrical beauty and powerful storytelling of James Lee Burke at his very best.
Two men break out of a Louisiana prison in 1835 and flee to Texas. Once there, they join Sam Houston's army and take part in the Texas' revolution of 1835-36. This is an entertaining combination of fiction and history with some Native American lore and some romance thrown in for good measure. ( )
Well-written story of two convicts who escape from Louisiana and flee to Texas where they become embroiled in the battle of the Alamo. The plot is singular and linear, which is the only significant flaw of the book. Without any subplots, there is too little complexity for a thriller of this length. ( )

The first day that Son Holland arrived in the penal camp, manacled inside a mule-drawn wagon with seven other convicts, he knew that he would eventually escape, that he would die before he would spend ten years in a steaming swamp under the guns and horse quirts of malarial Frenchmen with Negro blood in their veins and a degenerate corruption in their hearts.
