Much more than a light read. Interesting version of cancer and its effects of the treatments as Vicki has to deal with it while technically on a vacation. Josh was an amazing babysitter, but as the book showed, really learned how to grow up from just having sexually fascination to what it really takes to love someone. Brenda got to me as being so self centered as a sister yet eventually learns some compassion. Melanie was right to experience an affair just like her husband had done to her. ( )

While I thought this would be a light read, it had some difficult topics that afflicted each of the women characters. They each arrived to Nantucket for the summer with individual problems and over the course of the time there, they all come to a resolution. It was an easy read but the characters were hard to like initially and some of the circumstances were not 100% believable. I did enjoy the story and their interactions with people that helped them work towards a future. ( )

Three women and two children step off a plane in Nantucket. There's Vicki, mom to the small two boys, who has recently learned that she has lung cancer. There's her sister, Brenda, an academic reeling from losing her job after having an affair with one of her students. And then there's Vicki's friend, Melanie. After many IVF treatments, Melanie is finally pregnant; but, she's also found out husband, Peter, is having an affair with a colleague. They've come to Nantucket to try to heal Vicki--who will be going through chemo--and escape their problems. Watching them is twenty-two-year-old Josh, an aspiring author stuck working at the airport. Soon the lives all three women (and kids) with intertwine with Josh's.

"Three women step off a plane."

"The most miserable-looking people he had ever seen. That's what Josh had thought right from the beginning. And no wonder."

I read this book while away for work, away from my family, stuck in a hotel room in the evenings, exhausted and spent. It might not have been the best choice in hindsight, as this book is rather brutal and sad in its own right, but it wound up being a great diversion. I love Elin Hilderbrand's books, and this was an enjoyable one, despite the sadness. I liked the characters, but loved the Josh the most, our wannabe writer who finds himself caught up in the drama of these women.

And it was easy to get caught up in their lives and craziness. Brenda and Melanie had melodrama, but Vicki, oh Vicki, her storyline broke my heart. I've always had this fear of cancer and leaving my own kids, so this one struck me right in the gut. This book is really heart-wrenching--and doesn't shy away from the hard stuff: Vicki's chemo, her fears of dying and leaving behind her kids, how sick and terrified she feels. It's a tough read, but it's also hopeful and a great story of friendship and family.

Overall, I enjoyed this one, and it only cemented my desire to keep reading Hilderbrand's back catalog. 3.5 stars.

After reading some pretty depressing stuff this past month, I was in need of something light and this is - literally - a beach read. But seriously? Who are these women? Certainly, I hope not role models.

First there is Vicki, a privileged wife living in Darien, Connecticut with two small boys. She's been diagnosed with lung cancer and is about to undergo chemotherapy. And where better to do that than in Nantucket at the "cottage hospital" where - guess what? Not only is there a wonderful oncologist in residence but also a wonderful thoracic surgeon. Who knew?

Then we have Vicki's sister Brenda who in her first college teaching job decides to flaunt the college's #1 rule against having relations with students and has a mad affair with an older student in her class. But who could blame her because the moment she sees this hunk and hears his Australian accent, she just can't think straight. Of course they get caught, she gets fired in an a fit of pique throws a book and damages the college's prized Jackson Pollock painting. It's all just SO UNFAIR! So what to do? Well accompany her sister to Nantucket where they get to stay in the summer cottage they both have conveniently inherited from a maiden aunt, and write a screen play that will miraculously change all her misfortunes.

Rounding out the trip is Melanie who has been trying to have a baby and whining about everything while she's trying. She discovers that she's pregnant simultaneously with discovering her husband is having an affair (probably because of her non-stop complaints). She mostly sniffles, gets sick at just about everything and ogles the hunky college student that Vicki hires to look after her children. And then, because no one in this book has any self restraint, she and the babysitter have a mad affair.

And oh yes, there is a 'bad girl" - Josh the babysitter's ex-girlfriend. She's poor and irresponsible and very upset when she finds out about Josh and Melanie, but don't worry. The author conveniently kills her off before she can do serious damage to what are supposed to be the important characters.

The three protagonists are privileged, selfish and unaware of anyone other than themselves. Why am I supposed to find them sympathetic? I see this author's books everywhere and they all seem to be a variation on this beach theme. But one book by Elin Hildebrand is more than enough for me. ( )
