Bilingual Edition -- German/English Hans Magnus Enzensberger is Germany's most important and influential living poet, a lightning rod in a stormy political and cultural landscape. (Translations of his Kiosk and Selected Poems have also been published by Sheep Meadow.) Having come of age after the Third Reich, Enzensberger builds his poetry upon tradition and titanic German wreckage. Always historical and provocative, his humanity dares to sport a sublime malice toward all and charity for few. His revelations have something in common with certain post-Renaissance painters, whose Madonnas are both spiritual and lascivious.… (mais)

Enzensberger is interesting to me. His poetry tends towards the sardonic--somewhat sarcastic. It is sometimes overtly political and social in nature and Hans Magnus is not a big fan of powerful interests or powerful people. He takes a dim view of at least a lot of what passes for progress.

Prestabilized Disharmony; or, Liebniz revisited goes like this:

For everyone who smashes
his beer bottle on the Tamil's head,
a surgeon at the emergency ward
who patches up his skull.
And vice versa.

For every mine-clearer
who risks his skin,
a munitions dealer.
And vice versa.

For every violent rapist a violent woman
holding a steak knife in her hand,
for every social worker a neo-nazi,
for every well-off person
a fiscal investigator, for every
monster a gentle madonna, and vice versa.

Alas, each and every one of us
has his hands full.
There's no end in sight.

And for another short example we have:

A notice from the health insurance

Little soul, lighter than air,
heavier than the stone on your tomb--
indeed, one can't negotiate with you,
unpolitical as you are
and fickle like the weather forecast!

All the while you want to be lifted.
Nobody can comprehend you,
selfish mimosa, least of all
you yourself. Really,
one could feel sorry for you!

But that would be a mistake.

Anyway I find a certain lucidity in his work. I like the social and political framework he builds his poetry around. It may not be for everyone but there are plenty of other poets out there too. ( )
