In this beautiful and moving novel about family, love, and growing up, Ann Patchett once again proves herself one of America's finest writers. "Patchett leads us to a truth that feels like life rather than literature."?The Guardian In the spring of 2020, Lara's three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew. Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.… (mais)

That Veronica and I were given keys and told to come early on a frozen Saturday in April to open the school for the Our Town auditions was proof of our dull reliability. The play's director, Mr. Martin, was my grandmother's friend and State Farm agent. That's how I was wrangled in, through my grandmother, and Veronica was wrangled because we did pretty much everything together. Citizens of New Hampshire could not get enough of Our Town. FYI - I listened to this book read by Meryl Streep. I liked it a lot.

I wish I had listened to the audiobook of this instead of reading it. After reading other reviews, it seems like I would have enjoyed that more. ( )

In the early months of Covid (not specifically named), while sheltering in place with her husband and three twenty-something daughters on their Michigan cherry orchard, Lara tells the story of her long-ago acting career and romance with an actor who gained extraordinary fame. The novel’s pace is leisurely, and its structure of sharp cuts between past and present requires attention and patience. I really liked it; I will remember these characters. ( )

Author does her usual superb job of painting human interiors.. two generations look at the lead (Lara)'s life as a briefly-famous stage and screen actress, her brushes with Hollywood, NY theater life & more. Lara also regales her love affair with an actor who goes to become mega-famous. Also an intriguing look at cherry farming in rural MI. ( )

While I never got bored, I don't understand the purpose of these books. I never connect with the characters nor grow attached to their stories. It feels like a friend sharing some personal memory, only I don't care for this friend and the memory is meaningless to me. ( )

And that is the difference between us: I was very good at being myself, while Nell is very good at being anyone at all.
"It's terrifying," she says quietly, and now I see the tears in her eyes. "The idea that in order to get to do this thing you really, really want, you might be told you have to do the exact thing you'd never want to do."

There is no explaining this simple truth about life: you will forget much of it.
