#1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey is back in Napa Valley with this hilarious rom-com about a down-on-her-luck heiress who suggests a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience to a man she can't stand... only to discover there's a fine line between love and hate.

After losing her job and her fiancé in one fell swoop, Natalie Vos returned home to lick her wounds. A few months later, she's sufficiently drowned her sorrows in cabernet and she's ready to get back on her feet. She just needs her trust fund to finance her new business venture. Unfortunately, the terms require she marry before she can have the money. And well, dumped, remember?

But Natalie is desperate enough to propose to a man who makes her want to kill him??and kiss him, in equal measure.

August Cates may own a vineyard, but he doesn't know jack about making wine. He's determined to do his late best friend proud, no matter what it takes. Except his tasting room is empty, his wine is disgusting (seriously, he once saw someone gag), and his buddy's legacy is circling the drain. No bank will give him the loan he needs to turn the business around... and then the gorgeous, feisty heiress knocks on his door.

Natalie has haunted August's dreams since the moment they met, but their sizzling chemistry immediately morphed into simmering insults. Now, a quickie marriage could help them both. A sham wedding, a few weeks living under the same roof, and then they can go their separate ways??assuming they make it out alive. How hard could it be?

There's just one thing they didn't account for: their unfortunate, unbearable, undeniable attracti… (mais)

A rom-com set in the Napa Valley. Natalie Vos has returned to her family vineyard after a failed financial gamble in New York City, and a broken engagement. August Cates is also in Napa, having promised his late friend (and fellow Navy SEAL) that he’d fulfill his dream of opening a vineyard. They hate each other but agree to a sham marriage so that she can get her trust fund (to return to NYC), and he can get a business loan to continue his efforts in Napa.

So, there’s a kernel of a cute idea here. But these two are so NOT interesting. Natalie is a whiny, spoiled brat who mistakes lust for love. August is clearly suffering some PTSD, and also prone to “thinking with his dick.” The fact that his actions make this obvious isn’t enough for Bailey, though. She has to tell us this at least twenty times.

Of course, they have hot sex and achieve multiple orgasms. But these scenarios are so ridiculously unbelievable that I found them tedious to read. With two exceptions … Loved these descriptions:
”August’s climax was like reaching land after parachuting at night into the ocean.”

And perhaps the best (or at least most entertaining) metaphor I’ve ever encountered:
”She rode on a rainbow unicorn over the Milky Way and waved at an astronaut.”

The book gets 1 star for those two descriptions. ( )

I don't know why, but I STRUGGLED with this one. It's got all my favorite things: marriage of convenience, former military MMC, he falls first... but I had to force myself to finish it. Maybe I'm just outgrowing Tessa's writing. ( )

After a slowish, predictable first half, this audiobook got better, then better. It is playful and very romantic. Entirely due to August Cate, ex SEAL and neophyte vintner.

He is so smitten with Natalie, daughter of neighboring successful vintners, that half the time it seems inconsistent that he is a SEAL when his brain is rendered powerless by how overwhelmed he is by her.

The story is all about the learning curve he goes on to be what he needs to be to meet her where she is. It is any woman's dream.

The story peg is Natalie needing to gain access her trust fund, and build trust in August as the man for her, after recent epic disasters in her life and a family that treats her as an also rand.

The story location is Napa Valley, with a visit to New York.

Convinced yet that this is one hell of a romantic novel? This would make a great romcom movie provided the syrup didn't outdo August's awesome ability for insight and change, and the fabulous repartee between the two leads. ( )

Book 1 in this series was a hit for me, and book 2 continued the good feelings. Tessa Baily often writes poised, educated, affluent women who hook up with less poised less educated less affluent men and for a variety of reasons that can wear thin, not because I don't like a little socioeconomic friction, but because the friction is the same in every book One of the things that worked for me in the last book is that Tessa flipped the genders on that odd couple and I liked that. As much as we have moved away from the idea of men as providers,to some extent that idea is hard-wired in a lot of people, and that means a lot of the friction looks the same in relationships where traditional gender roles are swapped out. It is fertile ground for writers, but I have read that narrative a dozen times from Bailey, and the flip in the last book added a little much needed variety. Here we go back to rich girl falling for the burly manual laborer. The story uses that trope well so no hate, I just wanted a little more variety. Overall I loved the book, but our resident well-hung former Navy Seal was just so crude it broke into the romantic buzz. August regularly tells Natalie her "tits are insane", discusses how much he wants to "eat her out" and goes in to lift weights or do pull-ups before seeing his woman because he knows she likes it when the pecs pop. There is a lot of "you know you love it" commentary that makes August seem simultaneously narcissistic and insecure (if that seems impossible I have an ex I could introduce you to -- and a former boss now that I think of it - who managed that seeming paradox nicely.) Also, Natalie's father, who serves as the main villain in this tale, was (and this is very common in romance) ridiculous - we are talking Cruella deVille level villainy. This really threw me out of the fantasy. Overall though this was all pretty swoony. It did give me all the feels and the sexy parts were in fact sexy. I was a fan. ( )

Having been introduced to Natalie and August in Secretly Yours, I knew I wanted to see where their story went (if they didn’t kill each other first). Always a fan of the larger than life characters Bailey is able to create, Unfortunately Yours picks up where Secretly Yours left off - transitioning the storyline from one sibling to the next as we continue to love and embrace the Vos Clan.

One mistake! One mistake and that’s all it took for Natalie Vos’s world to come crashing down. Granted, it was one mistake with a lot of zeroes behind it but nevertheless, Natalie has found herself back in St. Helena, licking her wounds. If she wasn’t a wine bottle (or two) deep, she was trying to figure out how to make her way back to where she belonged. Sure, her firm may have voted her out and her fiancé may have dumped her, but Natalie was down, not out. She just needed capital to rebuild and she knew just how to get it. Setting pride aside, Natalie asks her mother for access to her trust fund, only to discover her father has placed the most absurd archaic stipulations in her way. She must be gainfully employed AND married! When did we re-enter the 1950s?! Reeling in her everlasting bad luck, Natalie makes the mistake of wondering how things could get any worse. That question is quickly answered when she happens upon the ONE person she would rather not deal with, even on her best day. August - the bane of her existence. Yes, Natalie almost slept with him and he was the mold from which heartthrobs were made but his arrogance knew no bounds! Flustered that her body still reacted to him and frustrated by her predicament, Natalie's unfortunate run-in births a brilliant idea! If she works for August’s vineyard AND marries him, she can get her trust fund. The problem is, if he helps her, if their deal is one-sided, he will have the upper hand and she will never live it down. When she learns the bank has denied his loan for his vineyard and he is heading out of town, Natalie approaches him with the idea that would help them both and make them even. One month of martial bliss to convince everyone their union is real and they both get what they want. Easy enough - as long as they don’t maim each other in the process.

The chemistry between Natalie and August was off the charts in Secretly Yours. Their love/hate dynamic had a life of its own. I was hoping that same energy was present in Unfortunately Yours. Sadly, we lost the intensity within this story by knowing what was going on in their minds. Being on the outside, we only saw the attraction, the build up, and the fire. When we were privy to their inner thoughts, it just made all the fighting, bickering, and animosity childish. Our perspectives of August shifted as we had access to his secrets, including WHY he was running a vineyard, despite his severe lack of knowledge and his stubbornness to not receive help (providing clarity to his reactions to Natalie's criticism). All of that painted such a different picture of the August we previously met that the tension and rift between him and Natalie just seemed off-kilter. Understandable that the need to maintain their outward relationship - that love to hate each other dynamic was the foundation of the story. Their digs at each other, the banter, the way they simply antagonized each other constantly was the kindling to their fire.

The intimate scenes when August and Natalie were together were insane! No matter how Natalie felt about August, she was putty in his hands behind closed doors. Tessa knows how to set the bar and rise above it in her books and the spice in this book did not disappoint. There were parts that were so intense, you kinda worried about Natalie a little bit (while envying her at the same time!)

Natalie’s struggle to be seen, heard, and valued was echoed throughout the book. She was good enough until she wasn’t. She was at the top of her game in the investment world until she tripped and no one offered to catch her. She clawed, she fought, she screamed to be heard but constantly felt like no one would miss her if she simply disappeared into the shadows. The one thing that she never lost, that she wouldn’t sacrifice was her integrity.

While Unfortunately Yours wasn’t what I expected, I did enjoy the witty banter, the overall story, and the surprise depth of August’s background. ( )
