Executed in a time of upheaval, Goya's portraits of the aristocracy, and his other etchings and drawings form a devastating comment on the society in which he lived. The authors depict Goya, drawing on episodes of his life and the iconography of his art, responding to his theatrical style.

Berger and Bielski draw a portrait of Goya and of the times of war and persecution he was living through; these are transposed to our times no less dominated by war, violence and persecution.
As in Goya’s paintings and more so in his drawings, there is play and biting irony barely covering the well of despair. How would, I wonder, come this out in a performance? In this text edition a drawing by Goya is placed before each act; some of these I had never seen before. (V-18)
