Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Economic Issues, Twelfth Edition, is a debate-style reader designed to introduce students to controversies in economics. The readings, which represent the arguments of leading economists and commentators, reflect a variety of viewpoints and have been selected for their liveliness and substance and because of their value in a debate framework. For each issue, the editor provides a concise introduction and postscript summary. The introduction sets the stage for the debate as it is argued in the "yes" and "no" readings, and the postscript briefly reviews the opposing views and suggests additional reading on the controversial issue under discussion. By requiring students to analyze opposing viewpoints and reach considered judgments, Taking Sides actively develops students' critical thinking skills. It is this development of critical thinking skills that is the ultimate purpose of each of the volumes in the widely acclaimed Taking Sides program. Book jacket.… (mais)

This book is dedicated to Thomas R. Swartz, my co-editor through the first eleven editions of this volume. His contributions are still evident in this edition, especially in the material carried over from the eleventh edition and in the Introduction. Perhaps he will find time to read the new portions of the twelfth edition as a part of his well-deserved retirement. It is also dedicated to my children and grandchildren. In order of their births, they are John Anthony, David Joseph, Michael Thomas, and Amanda Marie.

Preface -- Presented here are 18 debates of important and compelling economic issues, which are designed to stimulate critical thinking skills and initiate lively and informed discussion. These debates take economic theory and show how it is applied to current, real-world public policy decisions, the outcomes of which will have an immediate and personal impact. How these debates are resolved will also affect our taxes, jobs, wages, educational system, and so on; in short, they will shape the society in which we live.
