When the Norwegian ambassador to Thailand is found dead in a Bangkok brothel, Inspector Harry Hole is dispatched from Oslo to help hush up the case. But once he arrives Harry discovers that this case is about much more than one random murder. There is something else, something more pervasive, scrabbling around behind the scenes. Or, put another way, for every cockroach you see in your hotel room, there are hundreds behind the walls. Surrounded by round-the-clock traffic noise, Harry wanders the streets of Bangkok lined with go-go bars, temples, opium dens, and tourist traps, trying to piece together the story of the ambassador's death even though no one asked him to, and no one wants him to, not even Harry himself.… (mais)

Being a big fan of the Harry Hole series of books by Jo Nesbo I have been looking forward to reading the earlier books in the series since they were published in English. I have been warned by a few people that the first book, The Bat, isn't particularly good but that Cockroaches is a decent read. I always keep an eye out for any books in the series when I am searching second hand book shops and I was delighted to find a copy of Cockroaches for a very reasonable price of £1. It has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while and being set in Thailand it felt like a good time to read it.

The book starts with the discovery of a murdered Norwegian ambassador who is linked to the infamous sex trade in Thailand. Both the Norwegian and Thai authorities want to sort out the mess in the quietest way possible while at the same time being seen to be taking the matter seriously. To that end they decide to send a detective with experience working in a foreign country, Harry Hole. Harry isn't a in great place on a personal level, he is drinking too much and generally a pain in the ass to be around. Due to this, his superiors think that he will go to Thailand, enjoy the nightlife, and after a brief but ineffective investigation come home with the whole thing forgotten about.

Of course, this isn't how things work out and the case ends up being a very complex one with quite a few twists and turns. I thought that there were a few too many characters and on occasion I had to double check who was who to follow the story properly. Despite this, I really enjoyed the book and while it isn't quite up to the standard of some of the later books it is an enjoyable good read for sure. ( )

The second Harry Hole novel, finally published in the U.S. Like in The Bat, Harry is chosen to go abroad to investigate the politically compromising death of Norway's ambassador to Thailand -- a crime that the authorities are not sure they want solved. As always, Nesbo does a superb job hiding the culprit until the very end, with love, politics, sexual proclivities, and money involved. I think his writing has improved, with characters not as well developed as the later books. I liked Nesbo's balanced portrayal of Bangkok. ( )

Digital audiobook performed by John Lee

Book two in the popular Norwegian mystery series, has Inspector Harry Hole traveling to Bangkok to “help” investigate the murder of Norway’s Ambassador to Thailand, who was found stabbed in a brothel. Harry seems an unlikely choice for such a political sensitive assignment. He’s an alcoholic and a barely functioning one at that. But he takes the long flight as an opportunity to dry out (at least temporarily) and get his brain engaged once again.

I started reading this series with The Snowman and then decided I needed to go back to book one and start at the beginning. Nesbø crafts a complicated plot with many twists and turns and enough suspects, and side plots, to distract the most dedicated detective – and reader.

Harry is really growing on me. He’s flawed, of course, but I like the way he thinks and figures out the mystery. I also like how Nesbø explores Harry’s personal demons and struggle with drink. It’s not an easy thing to overcome and while he doesn’t dwell on it, the author doesn’t sugarcoat it either. I really liked Liz Crumley, who is an inspector in the Bangkok Homicide division, and would love to see more of her in the series.

I’ve been to Bangkok several times, and while my travels avoided the seedier areas of town that Harry must navigate as he looks into the case, I can say that Nesbø’s writing definitely evoked the sights, sounds, smells and flavors of that city for me. That steamy heat! The incessant cacophony of traffic! The relief of entering an air-conditioned building and enjoying an ice-cold beverage!

I did find myself cringing quite a bit at the more violent scenes. So, if you bothered by such graphic depictions this is probably not the series for you.

John Lee does a great job of narrating. He sets a good pace, and his diction is easily understood even when listened to at double speed. ( )

This book started out strong, it sucked me in in the first few pages. I really liked maybe the first 3/4rds of the story, but I didn’t particularly like how it ended. One, far too many of the good people were hurt or killed, and far too many of the baddies got away or did not suffer in any major way. But the main thing was the final telling, how all the convoluted twists and turns of the story are laid out in the last few pages. It’s basically an endless narrative until the author wants to end it and then it is... well, here you go. And the bad guy, like in a Bond movie, tells Harry Hole the entire plot so he can thwart the evil-doers and save the day and everyone knows all; it basically ended like that.

Still, another solid Jo Nesbø book. ( )

Among Norwegians living in Thailand there is a rumour circulating that one of their ambassadors, who died as a result of a car accident in Bangkok, was actually murdered under extremely mysterious circumstances. There is no evidence to support this, but it makes for a good story.
No persons or events mentioned in this book should be confused with real persons or events. Reality is far too strange for that.

The traffic lights changed to green, and the roar from lorries, cars, motorbikes and tuk-Turks rose higher and higher until Dim could see the glass in Robinson's department store vibrating.
Det blev grönt och vrålet från bilarna, motorcyklarna och tuk-tuk-taxina steg och steg tills Dim kunde se hur rutorna till Robertson Department Store skakade.
