Werther (romance de 1774) é um advogado bastante infeliz e excessivamente emocional. A obra epistolar de Goethe (sem dúvida influenciada por Samuel Richardson e Laurence Sterne, embora provavelmente não por Tobias Smollett) teve um impacto monumental no desenvolvimento do romantismo alemão e no desenvolvimento de uma poesia do sentimento, de 'Sturm und drang'. Impactou quase todas as formas de empreendimento humanista: drama (especialmente através da obra de Lessing), poesia, teologia (ainda a rainha das ciências na Alemanha do final do século XVIII), história e outras categorias de belles-lettres. Explodiu no cenário literário continental e elevou seu autor ao status de superestrela. Milhares de jovens cometeram suicídio imitando o protagonista, e Napoleão guardava uma cópia do livro em sua mochila. Werther, por suposto, seria, como o próprio Goethe, um pequeno funcionário da Reichskammersgericht (a Suprema corte imperial) sediada na cidade de Wetzlar, no Alto Reno. E Lotte seria, essencialmente, Charlotte Buff, o amor perdido de Goethe. ( ) Werther é um jovem alemão de família rica que se apaixona por Carlota, uma linda mulher, já noiva de outro rapaz, Alberto. Durante sua jornada, Werther demonstra todo o descontrole de um homem cujo amor não é correspondido em cartas a seu amigo Guilherme. O romance, um clássico de Goethe, é uma ótima leitura, que traz à tona a imaginação, já que boa parte dos termos utilizados e costumes descritos estarem ultrapassados, já que foi escrito no século XVIII. Interessante notar como o livro influenciou diversos autores após sua publicação, inclusive o brasileiro Machado de Assis, sendo possível traçar um paralelo entre Werther e alguns personagens machadianos como Rubião.
