I have liked these books for a long time before the BBC radio and the TV series. I was introduced to them at college by a gay friend who loved the camp element to them. It was a real thrill to visit Tilling (Rye) a couple of years back and poke around and match the real Rye with E.F.Benson's Tilling. Though the books are sometimes carelessly written (there are continuity errors and some careless characterization in places), the overall plots and above all the characters rise above this.

And if you look at Benson's enormous output, much may be forgiven. ( )

Hilarious and caustic socio-cultural satire of the order of Jane Austen. The Lucia books are basically Austen books minus the romantic plot-lines and transplanted into the 1920s. E.F. Benson has the same fearless eye for comical absurdity in human behavior, the same delight in follies and nonsense. ( )
