Probability theory is the underpinning of the modern world. Current research in both the physical and social sciences cannot be understood without it. Today’s politics, tomorrow’s weather, and next week’s satellite all depend on it. By ignoring, or failing to grasp, the laws of chance we hurt ourselves in many ways. We buy insurance we don’t need, for instance and then fail to insure the risks we should. We make damaging decisions in business and in driving a car. We also gamble on “systems”: to beat the house at blackjack, play unnecessarily bad bridge, and draw to inside straights. For the famous “Law of Averages” does not mean that half of all our guesses will come out right. Darrell Huff explains clearly and forcefully just what it does mean to take a chance, and shows how to recognize and deal effectively with the probabilities which so importantly affect our judgments and actions. - Back cover.… (mais)

Very highly entertaining, basic treatise on the nature of probability and statistics, from the author of "How to Lie With Statistics." As with the other book, the writing is very light, and Irving Geis' illustrations are both very sharp and delightful. Obviously, this is not a deep dive into the subject, but as a basic primer, it does very nicely indeed. Some of the advice as it relates to gambling is well-taken! ( )

Lots of fun, but it was odd. I read a lot of science books (geology, biology, paleontology, mathematics, physics...) but usually I don't know much about the subject, so I just accept what I'm told (and notice logical errors, but that's just me). This one was fascinating, but I know more about probability theory than is presented here. I'm not _used_ to being above the target audience! I kept thinking what the real equations were that he was presenting simplified... ( )
