Esmee, a choclatier is reconciled to the fact that she will be single all her life. A love affair gone wrong ten years ago has her longing for a family and home. Her old flame, Captain Henri returns to town and their love is rekindled. In spite of war and a prolonged absence their loves flourishes. A true blend of history and romance! This story is a story of second chances. It is the story of a woman with a strong character and independent spirit but with a soft heart for those around her. Frantz builds strong characters with deep faith and weaves providence throughout the story in a way that brings glory to God. She does not avoid difficult situations with her characters. She allowed this story to flow through hardship, slavery/antislavery battles, poverty, maliciousness and evil, abandonment, death and life, and so much more to bring a triumphant and hopeful story to the lives of the characters involved. Ms. Frantz has always been a good author of historical novels, but it seems that each successive book has a depth and maturity greater than its predecessors. She's reached new heights with [A Heart Adrift]. The reader feels authentically immersed in the world of Colonial Virginia near the outset of the French and Indian wars. The story concerns Esmee and Henri, a chocolatier and a sea captain who had been in love when they were young, but parted on hard terms over his devotion to the sea. Esmee's own father spent most of her childhood at sea, and she had seen to toll it took on her mother, and refused to embark on a marriage with similar long separations. Now circumstances bring them together ten years later, and the they struggle with old feelings that never quite died. It's a beautifully told tale, with a bit of a feel of Jane Austen's [Persuasion] about it. Faith is a strong thread in the story, but it flows naturally and believably from the characters, never feeling overly forced or preachy. I highly recommend this story to lovers of historical romantic fiction.. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest opinion. Once again, Laura Franz has written a historical novel that is enlightening and has wonderful characters who draw you into their milieu. You want to be part of this family. It has romance, fallible people, and a Christian worldview. It has many life lessons, one of which is to stand up to evil and do what you can to help others. There is a "happily ever after" ending tempered with sadness and tragedy. But the characters overcome with God's help. Well worth the read.
If you asked me at the moment what my ideal place to live would be, I would say living in a cozy cottage by the sea would be wonderful. And if it has a lighthouse nearby, that would be just perfect. If that sounds lovely to you, I think you’ll enjoy this book.☺️ A Heart Adrift’s setting was the highlight of the novel for me. It was so atmospheric. Oh, and this book calls for chocolate! Be sure to have some hot chocolate and your favorite chocolate on hand. 😉 I enjoyed the historical time-period as well. I haven’t read many books set during the 1700s so I enjoyed it quite a lot! As for the characters, Esmée and Henri were wonderful! Their love story was sweet and wholesome. I enjoyed reading their story of long lost love and reuniting at last. 🥰 The writing was beautiful! I loved how prayer and God’s word played such a integral part in the book. It was truly inspiring to me how these characters turned to God in times of worry and doubt as well as joy and thankfulness. The faith was woven beautifully into this story! So I’m conclusion, this was a beautiful story that I enjoyed very much! It was my first book to read by Laura Frantz and I was not at all disappointed! Now I’ll be daydreaming about living in a seaside cottage and be a lighthouse keeper.☺️ Sounds pretty great to me! *Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of the book to review. All opinions are my own.

I read this book with both the ebook and audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed Barbara McCulloh’s interpretation of Henri and the other characters. Although she falls out of character here in there, her intonations and diction added an authentic flair to the story and gave life to a broad cast of characters.
This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. ( )
