Written and illustrated by Kate Parker of Ngāti Maniapoto, Engish and Greek descent. This is a beautifully illustrated environmental story. The illustrations were made from hand-cut paper, placed in a plywood box and lit from behind. They are beautifully luminescent and layered, giving a real sense of movement and depth. Some spoilers here... The story follows a girl born from a flower called Kōwhai, who lived happily in an ancient forest. Then visitors arrived, who 'became part of the land'. Then what could be interpreted a colonial visitors arrived who have a dramatic impact on the environment. The story ends in hope and encouragement for those who feel one voice may not make a difference. Beautiful! ( )
