Go behind the scenes for a look at Warren Johnson's path to becoming The Professor of Pro Stock. This new book illuminates the life and career of one of the most prolific engine builders and racers ever to compete in the ultra-competitive Pro Stock category, drag racing's most technologically advanced class. Warren Johnson navigated the world of factory hot rods for more than 45 years, devoting himself to full-time racing in 1975 and relentlessly pursuing horsepower and victory from the driver's seat and the engine room. Johnson's devotion to research and development opened the door to a long-standing relationship with Oldsmobile and GM Performance, beginning with the birth of the Drag Racing Competition Engine (DRCE) that is still used by every competitive team in the class. He excelled when it came to outthinking the competition and was outspoken on matters that he deemed vital. Johnson embraced thinking outside the box and pushed boundaries to affect change in terms of both safety and the advancement of the class, but he also knew when it was appropriate and necessary to put on a good show for the fans. Through his tireless efforts and with the support of a small crew that included his wife, Arlene, and son, Kurt, Johnson claimed two IHRA championships and six NHRA world titles, along with an astounding 97 national event wins that placed him in the position of being the most-winning driver of all time in the Pro Stock category. This book, complete with photos from the family archive and striking professional images of Johnson's many race cars, dives into it all, beginning with W.J.'s childhood and early days of match racing when he developed the stern frugality and fierce resourcefulness that was the foundation of a tremendously successful, though sometimes controversial, career.… (mais)

"Drag Racing's Warren 'The Professor' Johnson: The Cars, People & Wins Behind His Pro Stock Success" by Kelly Wade offers an insightful glimpse into the life and career of one of drag racing's most iconic figures. Warren "The Professor" Johnson's legacy looms large in the world of Pro Stock racing, and Wade's book expertly chronicles the journey that led to his unparalleled success.

Wade's writing is both engaging and informative, providing readers with a comprehensive overview of Johnson's storied career. From his early days as a mechanic to his dominance on the drag strip, every aspect of Johnson's life is explored in meticulous detail. Through interviews with Johnson himself and those who knew him best, Wade paints a vivid portrait of a man driven by passion, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its portrayal of the racing community that surrounded Johnson throughout his career. Wade does an excellent job of capturing the camaraderie, rivalry, and sheer adrenaline of the drag racing world, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at the people and personalities that shaped Johnson's journey.

Additionally, "Drag Racing's Warren 'The Professor' Johnson" is filled with stunning photographs that bring Johnson's story to life. From action shots on the track to candid moments in the pit lane, each image adds depth and authenticity to the narrative, making it feel as though readers are right there alongside Johnson every step of the way.

While the book offers a comprehensive overview of Johnson's career, some readers may find themselves wishing for more in-depth analysis of his racing techniques and strategies. Additionally, Wade's writing style, while accessible, occasionally lacks the depth and nuance that more seasoned racing enthusiasts may crave.

A must-read for fans of drag racing and motorsports history alike. With its engaging narrative, stunning visuals, and unparalleled access to one of the sport's greatest legends, Kelly Wade has crafted a book that is as informative as it is entertaining. Whether you're a longtime fan of Warren Johnson or simply someone with an interest in the world of Pro Stock racing, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression. ( )

Drag Racing’s Warren “The Professor” Johnson (2020) by Kelly Wade. The “Professor” of Pro Stock Racing is a well known, highly respected, and, in many cases, a man held in awe by his friends and foes alike. For almost fifty years he has built and raced some of pro stock’s best cars. His list of wins is spectacular, his feats of daring (the first to break the 200 mph barrier) awesome, and his induction into hall of fame after hall of fame marks him as one of the top ten racers in history. But this is a book about the man who brought his engineering knowledge, no nonsense approach, and common sense into the world of racing.
There are the details you would expect to find in any talk about a racing legend. There is the rags to riches rise of this hard headed man, the determination to not only show up but to win. There is also the family side to his story that is shown progressing throughout the years. But there is one thing here that separates this story from many like it.
There is Warren Johnson’s wife, Arlene. Yes, she was there in the early years, the days when things were still not certain for their future, and she was there when The Professor began his rise to fame and glory. But mostly she was there with her camera and we are thankful for that. She chronicled his journey to the far reaches of the country, race after race and track after track. She was as much in love with the sport as he was and the result is some of the best insider photos, included in this book, that any one has ever had the privilege to witness.
The photos enhance the racing biography of W.J., knocking some of the gruff crust off the man and letting in a little light from the person who knew best where to shine it.
There is also a selection of the Professor’s thoughts and lessons scattered around the book. These may be taken just as talks about the racing life, but they also reflect the collect wisdom about life as seen through one man’s eyes.
To sum up, Kelly Wades book is a fitting homage to the Professor, and a fun read into the bargain. ( )

I was not familiar with Warren "The Professor" Johnson before reading this book, I did find this book very interesting. I found it amazing that he accomplished much with little, small team and small funding till he received the GM sponsorship. There was however a lot of repetition in the book with some of the facts repeated in the narrative and in the explanation of the pictures. ( )
