This picture storybook has a readability level of PreK-K. In the story, it lists all of the necessary items needed to build a snowman. The illustrations show the steps to building the snowmen as the children slowly assemble their new snowy friend. I would use this book to show the students that sometimes it is important to make lists of things we need so that we don't forget. Then, I would ask them things we need for activities they are familiar with (brushing their teeth, washing hands, etc.). Then, I would have them draw pictures of how to do that task step by step (wet tooth brush, put tooth paste on, etc.). ( )

In a 6th grade class I would use this as a model text to have students create an instructional poem. They must explain how to do something throughout their poem and they can choose what ever they want to write about. This will demonstrate their understanding of the poem we read in class as well as the performance ability to create one of their own. Another use for this book would be in a 2nd grade class when doing a lesson on sequence of events. I would read this book as an interactive read aloud and pause asking students to explain the sequence of events for creating a snowman. Then at the end I would ask them to tell me all of the steps the children in the poem used to make their snowman. This will demonstrate their understanding of the text as well as their ability to recall events in their proper order.
