Three Black women try to develop successful personal and professional lives in Sweden and find overwhelming racism. A refugee is given a home and a menial job, but is thwarted by a lack of support network. A marketing executive from the US is recruited but finds racism and distrust in her new job. And a flight attendant is pursued by a mentally disturbed Swedish executive, with abysmal consequences. Not an enjoyable read as the alleged blissful Scandinavian utopia is revealed as a sham. ( ) Kemi is Nigerian-American and works in marketing, successful in her job but unhappy with her love life. Brittany-Rae is a model-turned-flight-attendant. Muna is a Somalian refugee. All three women have their lives impacted by Jonny von Lundin, the CEO of a Swedish company. Each chapter is broken down into Kemi, Brittany-Rae, and Muna's stories, all told in third-person and simply following their lives over the course of about two years. The three women are connected in some ways, but overall are very isolated, as they deal with being Black and foreign in a Swedish society that prizes homogeneity. The author is Nigerian-American living in Sweden, and I appreciated the abilities shown by her debut novel, though it was a little sad and unresolved for my taste. Interesting story of 3 black women who are involved with the CEO of a major Swedish Marketing firm in Stockholm. Two of them work for his family company, one becomes his wife. The backstories of these three ladies are very different but the common thread is they all move to Sweden as a black women. I didn’t expect the ending, kind of surprised me. These characters will probably stay in my thoughts for a while. When successful PR exec, Kemi Adeyemi, is recruited to help diversify Sweden’s largest marketing firm, she finds the transition to a monochromatic white society difficult. Told in tandem with the story of Britanny Rae, who has been swept away in the whirlwind of romance to marry Kemi’s ultrawealthy boss and that of African immigrant, Muna Saheed, the cleaning woman at Kemi’s firm, whose life is much different than the other two women show the challenges of racism, prejudice and elitism. It’s unsettling book, made more so, by the ending. The author, who moved to Stockholm in 2009, has crafted a book that entertains as well as shows challenges faced by minorities. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

Three Black women are linked in unexpected ways to the same influential white man in Stockholm as they build their new lives in the most open society run by the most private people. Successful marketing executive Kemi Adeyemi is lured from the US to Sweden by Jonny von Lundin, CEO of the nation's largest marketing firm, to help fix a PR fiasco involving a racially tone-deaf campaign. A killer at work but a failure in love, Kemi's move is a last-ditch effort to reclaim her social life. A chance meeting with Jonny in business class en route to the US propels former model-turned-flight-attendant Brittany-Rae Johnson into a life of wealth, luxury, and privilege as the object of his unhealthy obsession. And refugee Muna Saheed finds a job cleaning the toilets at Jonny's office as she works to establish her residency in Sweden and, more importantly, seeks connection and a place she can call home. Told through the perspectives of each of the three women, In Every Mirror She's Black is a fast-paced, richly nuanced novel that touches on important social issues of racism, classism, fetishization, and tokenism, and what it means to be a Black woman navigating a white-dominated society.
