"First came the pandemic, then came The Calamity. The few remaining humans are huddled in impoverished villages. The animals, meanwhile, have convened a gathering, each group sending a representative to debate and vote on whether to help the last human stragglers... or to kill and eat them. As each animal makes its case, the fate of humanity depends on whether each species will act in its own self-interest, or if they will follow the lead of the kindly bear who believes that humans can be rehabilitated. The impending decision forces each animal to confront their past traumas at the hands of the humans while also putting them in the position to reign over the other sub-species -- rodents and insects -- if they so choose. The desire for power, deeply ingrained prejudices, and glimmers of righteousness guide the members of the council as they work to establish a new world order." --… (mais)

This is billed as a "fable for humans of all ages" but I felt like I was being talked down to. I was also bored by it and thought it was a waste of time. I do not recommend bothering with it.

It feels a bit odd to describe a book as "whimsically post-apocalyptic," but in this case it seems fairly apt. A quick satirical fable for our times, with the animals deciding what should be the fate of the humans. ( )

This quirky modern day fable is the story of what happened with the animals after The Calamity. Undoubtedly, The Calamity was the fault of the humans, although it affected everyone. Now, the animals are going to vote to decide what to do with the remaining human stragglers: help them or eat them. The Council has convened, and the handful of animals are safe there - no predators may eat any of the council members! And so they cast their votes. But some new information regarding the humans comes to light, which may sway the vote. And really, can all the animals be trusted? Readers likely will look for parallels between human society and this animal culture, but perhaps this book is only meant to entertain. Or maybe not. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned from this parable. All I can say is, I am on the Cat’s side! It’s a quick read, and thought provoking. Add it to your TBR pile. ( )

I received this book as a first read from LibraryThing. This was a very quick read and enjoyable. I liked the authors writing and thought the format of a fable was a good one to use. At first, I thought some of the words were misspelled but then realized they were put there intentionally (to add to the animal centric viewpoint) and then it became a game to look for more. I thought the animals characters were well done and found them to be very human in their thinking. I had thought that there would be more of a message through out the book but it wasn’t really present until the end. ( )

A modern, post-apocalyptic fable, 'The Council of Animals' gives us the imperfect and surprisingly human animalian delegation that is to decide whether are not humans will continue to be a thing. It appears that things have gone rather badly for people lately with their governments and civilization and they are on the run. The animals must decide: do we finish them off or leave them alone? This was much more entertaining than the hundred-odd television episodes and movies I've seen that discussed this issue. An effective look at the problem that is us. ( )
