Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel.

Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia's perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life does not appeal.

Frankly, Sofia doesn't exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie's ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop??and Carmen? And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured fam… (mais)

I usually thoroughly enjoy Jenny Colgan's easy-reading stories set in Scotland. This one, set in Edinburgh, was not as enjoyable to me. I have tried to figure out why that is, but the reason eludes me; as much as I always enjoy Ms. Colgan's cozy novels, I just felt this one missed the mark. Nevertheless, she tells a good tale in this romantic comedy of sorts. It just wasn't the page turner I have found other books she penned to be. ( )

I adored, loved, raved over the first book I ever read from Jenny Colgan, her sci-fi romcom Resistance Is Futile. So, I have been meaning to read this, her Christmas bestseller, for some time now.

The extent to which you find yourself engaging with the lead character’s personality is often key to your enjoyment of a drama-filled novel. It was a slow burn for Carmen and I.

Carmen couldn’t, she thought to herself, be the only person in the world who was both nearly thirty and who still turned into a stroppy teenager when confronted by her mother.

While I did enjoy this mental musing and completely understand the instinct, perhaps I’m just getting to an age when I have little tolerance for petulant, cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face behaviour? Anyway, thankfully frColgan was just setting the starting point low for her subsequent satisfying redemptive story arcs.

There are a lot of different story threads in The Christmas Bookshop – the plight of a bookstore, the plight of the bookstore’s owner, the commercialisation of Christmas and faith, the evils of the publishing-marketing-social media machine, the sometimes challenging relationship between sisters, the value and expectations women place upon themselves in their lives and relationships, and even how best to raise children – which yield drama aplenty. Then there’s the general overarching theme, a personal favourite, of not judging people by their covers. Half the adult characters in this novel are brats, which pretty much makes them irredeemable in my eyes, and just about every character is one-dimensional. Which is a shame, because there's a lot about this book that doesn't suck. The setting, mainly. And the bookshop, obviously. ( )

Carmen and her sister Sophie tolerate each other for their mother’s sake, but have little affection. Carmen believes Sophie, as the “perfect” one looks down on her, and Sophie doesn’t understand Carmen at all. When Carmen loses her job, she is forced to return home, and Sophie, looking for someone - anyone! - to help out at a bookstore, she practically forces Carmen to take it. It’s not long before a friendship develops between Carmen and the elderly bookstore owner. He loves books, but not running the shop. Carmen, on the other hand, has some imaginative ideas for drumming up business for the dying bookstore. There are a couple of new guys who wander in the shop, and maybe there is some romance in store for her. Sophie is depending on Carmen to help babysit her kids while she is awaiting the birth of her fourth child, and it’s not long before Carmen starts to enjoy her sibling’s kids, and even being with her sister. After all, it is Christmas! This lovely story is sure to fill you with the holiday spirit. Jenny Colgan always delivers touching stories with interesting characters that will fill you with happy feelings. ( )

Kind of what you would expect from this author. Not near enough about the bookstore but the parts with her perfect sister and her kids were funny.
Too many dumb romantic mishaps and misunderstandings, but the book was light and entertaining. ( )
