Mémoires de Sa Sainteté Tenzing Gyatso, le XIVe Dalaï Lama du Tibet.
L'année 1984 marque vingt-cinq ans d'exil pour cent mille Tibétains et leur chef spirituel et temporel, le XIVe Dalaï Lama.
A ceux des Occidentaux qui lui demandent directement ce qu'ils peuvent faire pour son peuple, Sa Sainteté répond qu'ils doivent s'attacher sans relâche à rappeler l'existence et la situation actuelle des Tibétains.

Un livre que je respecte comme l'un des grands témoignages de notre époque, l'un des plus sages, des plus sobres, et qu'on sent imprégner tout entier de l'admirable refus bouddhique d'ajouter au mal ou de répondre à la violence (et quelle violence !) par une violence même verbale. Un tel livre en ces temps troublés, et où règnent partout l'intimidation et l'imposture, est un admirable exemple de modération, de sérénité, et de foi — malgré tout — dans ce qu'il y a de meilleur dans l'homme.

I read this book last Spring. It is the autobiography of the Dalai Lama from his birth, being chosen as the new Dalai Lama as a young child, becoming the leader of Tibet as a teenager, and his escape from Tibet as a young man (traveling on a yak through the mountains in secret). This is a great book to help you understand the recent history of Tibet, the culture of Tibet, and the colonization of Tibet by China. It is very interesting to read and is not too hard to read. ( )

While reading this book, I was struck by several things. First, the Dalai Lama XVI is one of those rare people whose patience and wisdom from such a young age is truly remarkable, and this is an example of the right person at the right time. Second, throughout the book there is a tone of hope that a peaceful solution can and will be found. It's now been over 50 years, and he and 60,000 other Tibetans are still in exile. Third, the power of rhetoric ("reactionaries", "expansionist imperialists") is astonishing and baffling when seen in black and white on the page.

Glad to know more about the struggle that Tibet has had, as the original events were before my time. Also glad that this impressive man shared his thoughts and experiences for me to read. ( )
