This was all right I suppose. I found Mia a bit of a puzzle: it's her first time in LA and her boyfriend of 7 years has just dumped her for some one else by text, but she swans round LA in her loaned Audi without getting lost or accidentally driving on the wrong side or even worrying about either of those things. She was refreshingly competent at her job, but I am really getting frustrated with novels where women realize some one has been accessing their home and moving things around/taking things and interfering with their email, and sort of note it and decide to get to the bottom of things later. A suspense thriller with an entertaining, if rather far-fetched plotline. It’s an enjoyable read, if you can suspend your disbelief for a time. But, hey, stories all make-believe anyway, so that’s okay, right?

Some scenes were overly described, like they were meant for a film instead of a book, which makes sense seeing as how the author is both an actress and a novelist. The reader does get an interesting peek into the world of Hollywood, however, which is fascinating in the way a car crash on the side of the road is fascinating – the realities underlying all the perceived glamour and glitz.

On a related note, while the cover is stunning, I can’t for the life of me figure out what it has to do with the book other than a vague reference to Southern California palm trees.

A great Book Club Kit is available for The Disappearing Act, so it might be a great one for your next book club. It includes a both a letter from and Q&A with the author, discussion questions, a map of sites mentioned in the book, as well as recipes. I enjoyed Catherine Steadman's first novel, Something in the Water, so I was excited to read her latest novel. In this novel, Steadman tells a story about acting and the industry. When Mia Eliot is dumped by her boyfriend for a starlet, she leaves London to audition for some roles in Hollywood. While waiting to be called for an audition, she meets another actress, Emily. Emily asks Mia for a favor, and when Mia does it and returns to the audition room, Emily is gone. So begins Mia's obsession to find out what happened to Emily.
Strange things begin occurring, people aren't who they seem, and finally a confession scene takes place.
Acting is a story that Steadman knows well, as she is an actress herself.
I liked this novel, it was a quick read, but I am not sure I bought into what Mia's stalker was able to do/survive.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC! Opinions are freely given. ( )

I think this was the best book I’ve read all year!! Such a great, untold storyline. Loved the characters and truly had no idea what the ending was going to be. It was so interesting to see behind the scenes in Hollywood and the love story thrown in was great! Highly recommend! ( )
