"What happens when best friends with nothing in common come together, fall apart, and fall in love? The Vacationers meets When Harry Met Sally..., from the author of Beach Read When Poppy met Alex, there was no spark, no chemistry, and no reason to think they'd ever talk again. Alex is quiet, studious, and destined for a future in academia. Poppy is a wild child who only came to U of Chicago to escape small-town life. But after sharing a ride home for the summer, the two form a surprising friendship. After all, who better to confide in than someone you could never, ever date? Over the years, Alex and Poppy's lives take them in different directions, but every summer the two find their way back to each other for a magical weeklong vacation. Until one trip goes awry, and in the fallout, they lose touch. Now, two years later, Poppy's in a rut. Her dream job, her relationships, her life--none of it is making her happy. In fact, the last time she remembers feeling truly happy was on that final, ill-fated Summer Trip. The answer to all her problems is obvious: She needs one last vacation to win back her best friend. As a hilariously disastrous week unfolds and tensions rise, Poppy and Alex are forced to confront what drove them apart--and decide what they're willing to risk for the chance to be together"--… (mais)

The Road Trip de Beth O'Leary (julienne_preacher)
julienne_preacher: Similar in tone: lighthearted and fun with some serious stuff in the mix. Also similar in structure: there's jumping from present to past events in both books.

People We Meet on Vacation! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Awe, just awe! ❤️❤️

Poppy and Alex are best friends with completely opposite personalities—Poppy is a free spirit who loves adventure, while Alex prefers the comfort of home and a good book. Despite their differences, they’ve shared a week-long vacation every summer for ten years, a tradition that came to an abrupt halt two years ago after a trip that ended in disaster, causing them to stop speaking to each other. Now, stuck in a life that feels too routine, Poppy remembers that her happiest moments were with Alex on their last trip. Determined to reclaim that joy, she convinces Alex to go on one final vacation to try and mend their friendship. As they set out to fix the past, they must also face the unspoken feelings that have always lingered between them, adding a layer of complexity to their reunion.

Emily Henry manages to put a fresh spin on a well worn friends to lovers trope. I am enjoying reading my way through her books, and finding that contemporary romance is genre I really enjoy! 😊 Poppy and Alex are fun and hilarious together, and I found myself smiling through all their banter and interactions. The chemistry between Alex and Poppy is great- I was rooting for them from the start. Their deep understanding of each other added such a genuine and heartwarming layer to their relationship, making every moment between them absolutely enchanting. The concept of truly being seen by someone else, despite how scary it can be, was displayed so well.

The story grabbed me completely—I loved the witty dialogue, the comedic moments, and the emotional depth. I finished the book in record time because it was impossible to put down. Definitely a must-read!

“I’ll never belong anywhere like I belong with you”

“I still have a lot to figure out, but the one thing I know is, wherever you are, that’s where I belong. I’ll never belong anywhere like I belong with you.”

“It’s not your job to make me happy, okay? You can’t make anyone happy. I’m happy just because you exist, and that’s as much of my happiness as you have control over.”

“Tomorrow we will love each other a little more, and the next day, and the next day. And even on those days when one or both of us is having a hard time, we’ll be here, where we are completely known, completely accepted, by the person whose every side we love wholeheartedly. I’m here with all the versions of him I’ve met over twelve years of vacations, and even if the point of life isn’t just being happy, right now, I am. Down to the bones.” ( )

OMG! I loved this book. From the first to the last page. This book made me feel things and reminded me of how terrifying it can be to love someone so much that losing them can destroy you. I highly recommend this book 100% ( )

Well done on audio, Julia Whalen's voice makes the most of Emily Henry's witty dialogue - 5 stars for that. Great escape fiction with laugh-out-loud moments and some steamy romance. The downside is the utterly frustrating relationship dynamics of not talking, not listening, not even trying to behave with some growing maturity, over and over again (wonder what I would have thought if I had read this in my own 20-something years, because now it just makes me crazy) - 2 stars for that. Poppy and Alex…Alex and Poppy. I love them so much!!!

I fell in love with them as they fell in love with each other…from beginning to end this was such a beautiful depiction of loving, falling in love, figuring love out and living in love. It is possibly one of my favorite love stories ever! I felt so connected to Poppy, which is really funny because we are total opposites in personality, but I got her in so many ways. I’ve wanted what she wanted. And I’ve reached love the way she did. Love is the ultimate form of friendship.

I couldn’t put this book down and it was the perfect read to finish out summer. Easy and fun and beautiful but not fluff. ( )

People we meet on Vacation by Emily Henry
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Read: April 2023

I may have a new favourite book…

I’ve heard so many bad things about this book and read so many bad reviews that I almost deleted it from my list. Thank god I didn’t!! I want to have amnesia so I can go back and listen to this all over for the first time. I can already feel the book hangover, I don’t even care to think about the next book right now and I’m so sad it’s over.

I do understand how it could get a little confusing with the flash backs, but they are soooo necessary to see how perfect Poppy and Alex are for each other. They build on their friendship and love in such a maddening way it almost makes you want to scream. Their unique chemistry and wit just about killed me, and the dialogue in this was insanely good!

This is my second Emily Henry book I’ve listened too, and I have to say, I love that she finishes her books open ended. I love that we don’t get an epilogue where the couples are married off with kids, because, that’s not everyone’s ideal ending. Some people just simply want to exist together and I love that we can make our own assumptions as readers on how the characters story ends. ( )
