Warning: whatever snacks you have on hand while you read Finding Freedom will seem inadequate as you devour these descriptions of food. Erin French is known for her well regarded and highly publicized restaurant in Freedom, Maine. The title of her new memoir refers to her beloved small town that she once believed she would have to escape in order to have any kind of a happy life. It also refers to her emergence from addiction and a hellish divorce. She was bankrupt and broke—but somehow came up with the money to pay off her medical bills and open a new restaurant. It was the doctor’s fault that she became dependent on prescription drugs, her father’s fault that she felt worthless, etc. She seemed to be entirely friendless—but a host of friends magically appears in the final chapters to help re-launch The Lost Kitchen. For pages, she rakes her sister and ex-husband over the coals—but now her sister works for her, happily, it seems. Ultimately, I found her life narrative to be inauthentic—primarily casting herself as a hapless victim who then discovered her inner spunk. This poorly edited book is timed to release with a companion TV series. No doubt her fans will eat it up but I am not among them. ( )

nonfiction/memoir - divorce/toxic husband, addiction (mood pills and alcohol), building a successful restaurant in rural Maine without formal chef training.
This was maybe a little bit slow in the first 5-6 chapters, but was a fairly quick read once you get into it. ( )

I live memoirs and I love food. Erin French has certainly had a different, interesting and difficult life. And she’s managed to create a wonderful restaurant and life for herself, The Lost Kitchen. I know I’ll be trying to get reservations for years to come. ( )

Erin French's story of how she lost everything and rebuilt her life and her restaurant. She tells of her childhood, working in her dad's diner, then going off to college. She drops out because of pregnancy and becomes a single mother who has dreams of being independent and learns more of how restaurants work. That is where she meets her husband who is older than she is. He makes her feel special and after they marry she achieves her dream of owning her own restaurant. This is when cracks in her marriage and life begin to show. Unfortunately she loses everything and has to start over.

Erin French is a strong woman though too many in her life tried to tell her differently. I felt for her. I cringed as she mixed booze and pills. I felt anger as she tried to be a good mother, a good wife, and a good restaurateur. I knew something would have to give and it was she. But her overcame, persevered, and succeeded while others were doing their best to undermine her. She showed how to rebuild a life when you have nothing more than a dream and a hope. I loved the last few chapters. There are so many lost souls out there and she was able to help them rebuild their lives also.

I appreciated her willingness to share her life story which still has more to go. ( )

This memoir is one I've already recommended to my friends. It reads like a fictional story and the fact that the events actually occurred made it more emotional for me. I laughed, I cried, I got angry. I kept thinking how difficult writing this must have been for Erin, how much courage it took on her part to share her painful past with readers, and maybe putting her life events into words also became a type of therapy for her.

Erin didn't spare any wrong choice or hurtful thing done to her by others and that made the writing raw and kept me glued to the pages. I think others who read this will have their lives changed for the better--everyone has issues and carries baggage from life choices and we don't always get to know the whole truth--and I hope readers will remember this when dealing with other people and find compassion and patience.

Overall, the writing is clear, understandable, and made me feel what the author was feeling, and the food-centered life brought all the tastes, sights, and smells of comforting cooking. I highly recommend this memoir that flows like a well-written novel and brought hope to me with the strength Erin found within herself to fight for her own life and her son's. ( )
